Saurav wins 4 titles in badminton tournament

Chandigarh, August 3
Saurav Kapoor proved to be the star player when he cornered four titles in the Ninth District Panchkula Badminton Championship, which concluded this evening at the Sector 3 sports complex, Panchkula. Ms Satwanti Ahlawat, Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

Saurav bagged titles in under-16 boys singles and doubles, men singles and men doubles. Akshit Mahajan, student of Hansraj Public School, Panchkula, won the under-13 singles and doubles titles. Sachin Garg captured the under-19 singles title and later he in partnership with Saurav won the men doubles title.

Results: all finals; under-13: boys: Akshit b Dhruv 15-13, 15-6; doubles: Akshit and Dhruv b Rythem and Gaurav 15-12,15-11; girls: Mohini b Parul 8-11, 11-8, 11-8; under-16: girls: Kannu Priya b Pallavi 11-2, 11-2; boys: Saurav Kapoor b Adhiraj Neogi 15-12, 15-13; doubles: Saurav and Anshul b Prateek and Rasik 15-6, 15-1; under-19: girls: Kannu Priya b Gauri 11-3, 11-4; boys: Sachin b Prateek 15-5, 15-5; men singles; Saurav Kapoor b Sachin Garg 11-15, 15-10, 15-12; doubles: Saurav and Sachin b Gaurav and Prateek 15-8, 15-12; veteran doubles: Jatinder Mahajan and Mahesh Garg b P.K. Ahuja and Naresh Mittal 15-7, 15-4.

Karate

Shruti Singla and Dakshi AgnihotriDakshi Agnihotri, a 10-year-old student of Bhavan Vidyala, Sector 15, Panchkula, and Shruti Singla, a 13-year-old student of Little Flower School, Panchkula, clinched bronze medal each in their respective age group in the 19th National ITOSU-RYU Karate Championship which concluded today in Delhi. Both were part of the seven-member team which represented Chandigarh United Karate Association.

Carrom tournament

Taranpreet Pahwa of Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22 retained the sub-junior boys title while in the sub-junior girls section, Pallavi Piplani defended her title in a carrom tournament. Taranpreet defeated Piyush Sood of St Kabir School, Sector 26, 25-10, 20-11 while Pallavi got the better of Harmeet Kaur of St Joseph’s School, Sector 44, 25-4, 25-0.

In the sub-junior boys section, Taranpreet and Piyush Sood outplayed Viren Sood and Varun Sood, respectively.

In the sub-junior girls section, Pallavi Piplani and Harmeet Kaur defeated Harshpreet and Komal Sodhi, respectively, in the semi-finals.

In the junior boys section, Taranpreet Pahwa, Gurkirat Singh, Nikhil Bansal, Neeraj Bharti, Mukesh Kharbanda, Aditya Sharma, Abhinandan, Sumit Chakarborty, Varun Sood and Hargun Singh made it to the third round.

In the men singles section, those who entered the third round included Amjad Khan, D.S. Aithani, N.S. Pahwa, Neeraj Bharti, Monu Sharma and Taranpreet Pahwa. The final of the junior boys and girls section will begin tomorrow at 3 pm.

PEC cricket

Fine batting by Rajesh Arora, who scored 32 runs, followed by Gulzar with 30 runs enabled the PEC Employees Cricket Club to beat UT Education Department XI by five wickets in a league match of the inter-institutional cricket tournament played here today at the PEC cricket grounds.
