Tumour removed from 16-yr-old boy
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 2
Dr Dinesh Murmu, Senior Consultant, ENT, Christian Medical College and Hospital, successfully operated upon a 16-year-old boy recently. The boy had a large tumour in the parapharyngeal space which is situated next to the tonsil at the junction of the mouth and the neck. The tumor was almost the size of a cricket ball (about 9 cm in diameter). The boy had a lockjaw and was not able to eat anything. The jawbone had to be cut open for removing the tumor. The cut end of the jawbone was later stitched. The boy is recovering well.

The pathologists in the CMCH, have found the tumour to be a malignant haemangiopricytoma, which is a very rare cancerous tumor, especially in the parapharyngeal space. It is probably the first case of primary malignant haemangiopricytoma of the parapharyngeal space in India, claimed the doctors at the CMCH. So far only a few cases of malignant haemangiopricytomas have been reported in the world. The haemangiopricytoma tumor is usually considered malignant only when its cellular structure strongly resembles malignancy or when the tumor recurs. The tumor is extremely vascular (rich in blood supply) therefore the chances of excessive bleeding during the surgery are common. Contract enhanced CT scan and Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) is a must to operate upon such tumors. Very few medical institutions in the country have the DSA facility. Dr Dinesh Murmu for the past three years is working as the Consultant in the ENT Department of Christian Medical College and Hospital.
