Pace of work in LIT painfully slow

Mr Devinder Singh, a 36-year-old man, was 15 when a plot was purchased in his name by his father in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar under an Improvement Trust’s scheme. While all these years have passed, he is yet to get a registry in his name, thanks to the slow pace of work in the trust.

Adamant Oppn forces House adjournment
Ludhiana, July 30
Opposition members of the Shiromani Akali Dal, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party today forced the adjournment of the general house of the municipal corporation after the Mayor, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, refused to concede to their demand of calling the zero hour before any activity of the House.

Gastroenteritis tightens grip in city

The gastroenteritis threat continues to haunt city residents as more and more affected people have been pouring into the various hospitals and private nursing homes in the city. As many as 43 fresh cases of gastroenteritis were reported yesterday by the health department.

Mandi board to spend 210 cr on road repair
Ludhiana, July 30
The Punjab Mandi Board will spend Rs 210 crore on the repair and maintenance of roads in the state and a sum of Rs 80 crore has been earmarked for repairing link roads during the current financial year.

Cable operators ‘cheating’ PSEB
Ludhiana, July 30
Cable operators in the city are “cheating” the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) by furnishing false details about the use of electricity poles of the board for laying out cables. Cable operators use the poles and are supposed to pay a fixed amount to the PSEB for the same.

Tanjot Singh, a class XI student of Sant Ishar Singh Public School, Rara Sahib near here, who had been missing since July 13, was found at Gurdwara Hazoor Sahib, Maharashtra, yesterday. Police parties sent in search of the boy are yet to return.

ISKCON Temple opens on  Aug 12

The inauguration ceremony of Bhagwan Jagannath Temple, which is being built by the International Krishan Bhavnamrit Sangh ISKCON at Sterling Tower, Brindawan Road, will be held on August 12, according to a press release by the temple management here today.

Tenant not involved in  burglary: police

Police investigations into the burglary incident in Urban Estate here two days ago has ruled out the involvement of a tenant in the incident. The tenant, a mechanical engineer, was reported as missing by the family members for the past over a month.

The Civil Lines police arrested Ram Singh, a resident of a village falling under Adampur police station of Jalandhar district, from near the bus stand yesterday and seized 7 kg of poppy husk from his possession.

The United Nations Youth Organisation has flayed Punjab Technical University (PTU) for failing to conduct examinations of management, engineering, computer science and information technology and arts programmes even after one year of their start.

Life-term for killing wife
Ludhiana, July 30
Mr Inderjit Kaushik, Additional Sessions Judge, has sentenced a person to rigorous life imprisonment for strangulating his wife with a ‘dupatta’ on January 2002. A fine of Rs 2000 has also been imposed on him.

Jaghera’s remand extended
Ludhiana, July 30
Mr Jasbir Singh, Judicial Magistrate Fist Class, today extended the judicial remand of Shamsher Singh Jaghera, president of the International Sant Samaj, till August 13. He is facing charge in a rape case.

Media Artists stage play for students
Ludhiana, July 30
The Media Artists staged a play, “Eh lahoo kisda hai” for the students of Ramgarhia Girls College and Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women here today.
The play was based on Guru Nanak’s sakhi of “Sacha sauda”.

It was all fun for the kids of Strawberry Club who played “Adam and Eve” in an Eden Garden set-up at a resort here last evening. The fruits of knowledge were enjoyed through one-minute games like “pick the apple”, “charm a snake”, and “candy juggling”.

Acupuncture and deaddiction camp
Ludhiana, July 30
A week-long free acupuncture and drug de-addiction camp was organised by Dr D.N. Kotnis, Acupuncture Hospital, Salem Tabri, at Social Welfare Complex, Gill Road, Shimla Puri, Ludhiana. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Kuldip Singh Brar, District Social Security Officer, Ludhiana.

Paramedical staff burn Amarinder’s effigy

More than 200 paramedical employees of the District Health Department burnt the effigy of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, at the Mini-Secretariat here today. Agitated employees criticised the government for not releasing their salaries for the past six months.

The latest drug-coated stent angioplasty, which normally costs upto Rs 2.25 lakh is being heavily subsidised by Hero DMC Heart Institute, Ludhiana for the month of August 2003.

Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, quelled a strong challenge from their opponents, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, to win the soccer title (u-14) in the Punjab School Education Board Zonal (PAU) Schools Tournament which concluded today.
