Minerva Academy in final

Chandigarh, July 26
Minerva Academy trounced Scavengers XI by 106 runs to face JJ Sports XI in the final of the first Lt Col IS Deol Memorial Cricket Tournament to be played at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16 tomorrow. JJ Sports XI outplayed Century Steel XI by four wickets.

Brief scores: first tie: Century Steel XI: 113 runs all out (Vishal Devraj 26, Madan Lal 21, Manpreet 4 for 12). JJ Sports XI: 114 runs for six in 24.3 overs (Harpreet 42, Vishal Saini 23, Charanjeet 15, Manpreet 12).

Second tie: Minerva Academy XI: 210 runs for four (Rakesh Jolly 84, Ravinder Nain 62, ArunTuli 31, Gurdeep Rana 2 for 43). Scavengers XI: 104 runs all out in 24.5 overs (Sandeep Gulati 16, Gurdeep Rana 14, Rakesh Jolly 3 for 7, Harish Garg 3 for 15, Arun Tuli 2 for 22, Ranjit Bajaj 2 for 8).

Hockey tourney

A superb performance by Inderjit Chadha who scored 12 goals, enabled Wanders Club beat CISF Blues by 17-14 in the Six-a-Side Olympian Dharam Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament played here today under floodlights at the Sector 18 hockey stadium. For losers, Navad Jamal scored five goals. The half-time score was levelled at 8-8.

Nikhat, Karan excel

Nikhat Pannu in the girls section and Karan Bhai in the boys section bagged first place in the 50 metre butterfly event in a swimming competition organised by the State Swimming Association at the Panjab University swimming pool here today.

Other winners are: Vivek Yadav, Parkriti Sharma, Kunal Bhardwaj, Himanshi Bakshi, Vasu Sharma, Sparsh Arora, Vishnu Partap, Kamal Bhardwaj, Sukhman Ghuman, Puneet Rana, Vivek Kapoor, Amrit Bir Singh, Prabhjot Kaur, Jashandeep Singh, Sonali Chibber, Gaganpreet Singh Boparai, Abhimanyu Tiwari, Banmeet Kaur, Saachi, Amandeep Singh, Kanika Sharma, Zorawar Singh, Harsimran Kaur, Pankaj Chauhan and Love Raj Singla.

Swimming meet

A swimming competition for children and members of the Chandigarh Club will be held tomorrow at the club swimming pool. More than 50 swimmers in various age groups will compete in both boys and girls category.

Badminton meet begins

Chandigarh, July 26
The two-day Haryana Officers First Badminton Championship began this morning at indoor stadium on the office premises of Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula. The meet, being organised by the Haryana Badminton Association under the aegis of the Haryana Olympic Association, was inaugurated by Mr A.N. Mathur, Chief Secretary, Haryana.

While speaking, Mr Mathur said the Haryana Government was paying attention to the promotion of sports and the new sports policy had started yielding results.

Mr M.S. Malik, Director General, Haryana Police, and Secretary, HOA, informed that a Haryana Police Welfare Sports club was formed to keep the policemen fit.

In the opening round matches, Devender Singh, Managing Director, HAFED, and also president, Haryana Badminton Association, won his match against D.S. Dhesi, Commissioner and Secretary Sports, Haryana 21-2.

In other matches of the day, Anil Kumar beat S.K. Batra 21-4, Sandeep Dahiya outplayed S.P. Setia 21-10 and V.S. Kundu defeated O.P. Sihag 21-4.

In the veteran singles tie, Suresh Kumar Rajdev defeated K.C. Sharma 21-1, R.S. Yadav beat Pardeep Kumar Bansal 21-1, S.K. Setia beat Dr M.R. Singla 21-9, J.S. Malik defeated S.P. Arora 21-12.
