Hole in boy’s heart plugged through medication

A team of doctors consisting of Dr Balbir Singh and Dr Ramesh Batra created history when they succeeded in plugging the hole in the heart of a nine-year-old boy, Mohit of Bhiwani, through medication and without any surgery at Batra Cath Lab on the old DC road near Nandwani Nagar here yesterday.

According to a report, the boy had this hole since his birth and he had been suffering from cough and tiredness. He also had breathing problems. Doctors in Bhiwani, who examined him many a time, also conducted a series of tests, including echo cardiogram, and said there was the problem of mixing of fresh and used blood in the arteries and it could be set right through surgery in Delhi.

When the parents of the boy came to know that this defect could be removed without any surgery they contacted Dr Ramesh Batra, in-charge of Batra Cath Lab in this city. Along with Dr Balbir Singh, he succeeded in plugging the hole without carrying out any surgery.

Dr Batra told this correspondent here today that the cost of this treatment was half of the amount being charged for the surgery and the patient had to remain only for two days in the hospital. The patient, he claimed, could lead a normal life afterwards.

He also claimed that the Cath Lab had proved successful in plugging other small holes (ASD) without any surgery. The Cath Lab is also equipped with angiography and angioplasty machines and the patients suffering from various heart diseases are being successfully treated in this Cath Lab.

Dr Batra also said that the patients were being charged less amount as compared to big hospitals at Delhi and other places.

ONGC cricket team gear up for big events

New Delhi, July 24
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) cricket team, undergoing a 10-day coaching camp since July 21 at the National Stadium, had a surprise visitor on Thursday morning when Dr A K Balyan, executive director of Human Resource Development, came calling in the morning.

He was received by sports officer Sunil Khanna before being introduced to the players. The ONGC team is preparing for the All-India KSCA-MRF Trophy and the Buchi Babu Trophy to be held in Bangalore and Chennai respectively.

Dr Balyan, who himself was a cricketer, gave some valuable tips to the players, and asked them to give out their best for the ONGC team. He said their performances would help enhance their chances for selection into the Indian team.

The ONGC cricket team, which comprises many India players like Virender Sehwag, Mohd. Kaif and Gautam Ghambir, performed exceedingly well during the last season. They participated in 14 tournaments, won eight and were runners up in six.

Air Force gun down State Bank in DSA League

New Delhi, July 24
Indian Air Force, Palam fired a fissilade of goals to crush State Bank of India 6-0 in a Group I match of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL A Division Football League at the Ambedkar Stadium on Friday.

The Airmen led by two goals at the interval.

T K Agnihotri opened the account in the seventh minute and a minute later, R Adhikari added the second goal.

Arun enhanced the lead three minutes after resumption while striker Kalyan Pal scored a brace, in the 45th
and 49th minutes, to increase the lead to 5-0. Arun completed the tally in the
53rd minute.

State Bank suffered their second straight defeat. Ashoka Club defeated Nav Jyoti Nepal 1-0 in another Group I A Division match. Striker Romeo netted the match-winner in the 50th minute. Ashoka have earned six points from three matches while the Nepal team have secured three points from three matches in the B Division Super League.

Paschim Heroes trounce Goodwill

Paschim Heroes trounced Goodwill 3-0 at the Nehru Stadium East ground. Striker Parveen Shokeen scored the first two goals in the first half. Dinesh Shokeen slotted home the third goal in the 55th minute.

In another B Division Super Six match, Shakti Club defeated South India 1-0. Ravinder scored the match-winner.

Friday’s fixture: Frontiers vs Uttranchal Heroes (3.30 pm); Cosmos vs Ahbab (4.45 p m)—Ambedkar Stadium. Goodwill vs Shakti (3.30 p m); Nivia vs South India (4.45 pm)—Nehru Stadium.

Sports personalities to address workshop at MDU

Rohtak, July 24
A galaxy of sportsmen, who entertained millions of sports enthusiasts in their youth, will be seen in a different role at the premises of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here tomorrow.

These eminent personalities, including some Arjuna awardees and winners of other prestigious awards, will share their experiences with sports fraternity of the university for three days in succession at a workshop covering different aspects relating to sports, to be organised by MDU Sports Council.

Arjuna Awardees Mehtab Singh (boxing), Om Parkash (basketball) and Dr. Ajmer Singh (athletics), Olympian Trilochan Singh (basketball), Kanwaljeet (athletics) and general secretary of the Haryana Olympic Association, Mr. HS Bhadu, along with several other experts will deliver lecture on their respective subjects.

The organisers have claimed that it will the first workshop of its kind to be organised by any varsity of the region.

The workshop will be declared open by MDU’s Vice Chancellor, Maj. Gen. (retd.) Bhim S Suhag.

Sunal, Shikha shine in TT tourney

New Delhi, July 24
Sunal Jain prevailed over Nishank Bajaj 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 to lift the boys singles (under-17) title in the Chandravati Bhatnagar Manav Sthali Open Table Tennis Tournament at the Talkatora indoor stadium on Thursday.

In a close fight, Sunal Jain, after winning the first game, lapse into errors in the second to lose it, but came back roaring in the next three games to canter away with the title.

Shikha Sharma had to go the full distance to get the better of Esha Monga to annex the girls singles (under-17) title.

In a match in which no quarters were asked and none given, Shikha played with assurance to win the first two games before lowering her guard and allowing Esha to gain the upper hand.

Esha then won the next two games on trot to make it two-games all. After that it was a see-saw battle before Shikha prevailed at 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4.

Delhi sail into Under-16 soccer semi-final

New Delhi, July 24
Delhi stormed into the semi-final of the 26th National Sub-Junior (Under-16) Football Championship for the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy when they trounced Chandigarh 6-0 in their last Group II match at Haldwani in Uttranchal. Delhi finished second in the group behind Punjab.

Delhi, who were kept at bay by Chandigarh in the first, when on a scoring spree on resumption after inside-right Anand K P Kabui opened the flood-gate. He also struck home the second and fourth goals. Kabui had scored a hat-trick against Haryana. Inside-left Rajiv Karmar scored the third and sixth goals while Anubav Jha accounted for the fifth goal.

Delhi will take on Uttranchal in the semi-final on July 27 while Punjab will take on Uttar Pradesh in the second semi-final on July 28. The final will be played on July 30.

Delhi won the North Zone qualifying round last year after beating Uttar Pradesh.
