HOSHIARPUR
ARRESTED: The Hariana police has arrested Sukhdev Singh of Amritsar and his accomplice, Santokh Singh, for allegedly kidnapping his 13-year-old nephew, Varinder Singh and Amritpal Singh, from Fatehpur village in Hariana. Mrs Ranjit Kaur mother of Varinder Singh in her complaint stated that Sukhdev Singh was her brother who used to torture her mother for transferring land in his favour. She alleged that Sukhdev Singh kidnapped her son and Amritpal Singh.

HELD: The Model Town police arrested Narinder Kumar, son of Lachhman Singh of the local Mohalla Roop Nagar, for allegedly setting his wife, Navjot Kaur, on fire on June 27. A case under Section 307, 498A of the IPC has been registered against Narinder Kumar and his mother.

INSTALLED: Mr Pawan Kumar Adia, general secretary, District Congress Committee was installed Chairman of the Hoshiarpur Improvement Trust at a function here on Monday. Mr Romesh Chander Dogra, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab, presided over the ceremony. Dr Kuldip Kumar Nanda, president, District Congress Committee, local Congress leaders and prominent citizens were present.

NAWANSHAHR
ERRATIC SUPPLY: Residents here have been facing a lot of inconvenience due to the erratic power supply. Frequent power breakdowns, especially during the night, have made their lives miserable.

PHAGWARA
AGENT BOOKED: The Sadar police has booked a travel agent of Gobindpuri, Delhi, Malkiat Singh, for duping Purshotam Lal of Dhak Pandori village of Rs 5.7 lakh for sending him to the USA. A case of fraud has been registered against the travel agent.

PATHANKOT
ELECTED: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Rotary Club (Midtown) for 2003-2004: president — Mr Gurpreet Singh Ahluwalia and secretary — Mr Anil Vasudeva.

HIMACHAL PRADESH

DHARAMSALA
EXHIBITION: The first quarterly philately exhibition was held at the main post office here on Monday. The Superintendent of Post Offices, Dharamsala circle, Mr M.R. Chaudhary, inaugurated the exhibition.

MANDI
RED CROSS: Mrs Pratibha Singh, vice-president, Himachal Pradesh Red Cross Society, said at Lamba Thach, 90 km from here, in the remote Chachiot valley on Monday that Red Cross activities would be extended to the village level in the state so that its benefits percolated down to the poorest of the poor. Earlier, Mrs Pratibha Singh along with her son, Vikramaditya Singh and daughter, Aprajita, visited the famous Shikari Devi Temple at an altitude of 12000 feet.

NAHAN
KILLED: One person was killed and two were injured in an accident on the Nahan-Shimla road here on Monday. The injured have been admitted to the Nahan hospital. According to police sources, a tractor which was going from Janot village of Pacchad tehsil, overturned on a curve near Chabahan village, about 7 km from here. The killed was identified as Davender.
