Dhampur Squash Academy gives the game a popular touch
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, July 1
Squash cannot be termed a mass sport in India. Still, certain individuals and institutions have been making pioneering efforts to popularise the game in the country, to give it a “popular touch”. The Dhampur business house in Bijnore is one such company, which has been doing yeoman service for the promotion of the game of squash. The Squash Academy in Dhampur is second only to Squash Academy in Chennai.

Talent search to enroll players to the academy is done in Dhampur itself and youngsters are selected and then their skills are honed by the coach and the physio.

When the squash season is on, the boys shift base to Delhi, and train at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, under coach Shyamlal and physio Sharad Sharma.

The players of the academy like Ravi Dikshit, Imran Khan, Naresh Kumar and Amjad Khan have made their marks in the sub-junior, junior and under-19 tournaments all over the country.

The Dhampur team recently participated in the Indian Oil Servo Squash Tournament at Mumbai.

The Squash Racket Federation of India, under its dynamic general-secretary Ramachandran, has also given a new impetus to the game as a top class Squash Academy is being run in Chennai, under the able guidance of coach Cyrus, who himself was a reputed player.
