SC category students’ admission today

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 1
Unruly scenes on day one of the centralised admission to Class XI of government schools last year are all set for a repeat tomorrow when admissions take place at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23.

The Education Department would give admission to Scheduled Caste category students who have a domicile of Chandigarh. The rest would be ineligible for admission in this category where 14 per cent of the seats have been reserved for them. They would be treated in the general category and admitted according to merit as per rules of the Chandigarh Administration.

When contacted, the DPI (Schools), Mr DS Mangat, said that the Education Department had no role in the matter and that they were only following the policy of the Chandigarh Administration.

This policy of the Administration came under fire after the students without domiciles of Chandigarh were refused admission on the first day, set aside exclusively for students in the various reserve categories.

After the high drama that prevailed at the venue where admissions had to be suspended for a couple of hours, the UT Education Department did seek a clarification from the Administration in the matter. However, they were informed that the policy did not permit admission to students without domiciles of Chandigarh as per a recent notification.

Meanwhile, sources in the Administration said that a case in this regard was pending at the level of the Supreme Court. While students without the domiciles of Chandigarh would not be given admission in the reserved category tomorrow, the Administration has no option but to be at the “receiving end” despite not being at fault.

Besides, this policy is not limited to admissions alone but encompasses reservations in jobs and other appointments as well where a Chandigarh domicile is a must.

YOUTH LIFE & STYLE
Glitz & glamour
Time, love and venue... It all affects your relationship
Saurabh Malik

Photo Manoj MahajanReposing on a comfortable sofa in your living room with comely feet on the center table, you have been asking yourself the same question over and over — will it last or fade away into the recycle bin of impressive memory like a deleted file? The reason behind your anxiety is not hard to analyse. Taking you for a ride on his macho 350 CC bike, one fine morning he had suddenly applied brakes before asking you to go ahead with him on the meandering road of life.

Till now you had just been zipping up the geri route without thinking of a walk down the aisle. But now… the things are no so simple. After all, it is no more an all-flings-and-no-clings type of a relationship.

Well, if you think of it logically, things are not so bad. You like his charming smile. Admire his decency. No, he is not exactly tall, dark and handsome guy in love with his drinks and cigarettes, but is presentable. After all he is a post graduate in management. Besides, he has a two kanal house in Sector 19, along with a steady job with a multinational organisation.

Still you have been pacing the room alone, thinking about the days ahead with him. The fear of breaking up after a few years because of sheer boredom has been harassing you day and night.

And then, the example of your dear friend is right in front of your eyes. After dating her guy for three years, the two had decided to tie the knot. It took them less than three months to untie.

Okay girls and guys, stop scratching your pretty little head. If you want to know whether your relationship will last, even lead to the alter, read this: The future of your relationship depends upon where you met.

A survey reportedly carried out by the University of Chicago sometimes back revealed that couples introduced by friends and family were most likely to get married. Our own researchers add that the chances of their staying together through thick and thin are also high.

Why? "Well, they have a common frame of reference," says young psychologist Zubina Mathur. "They can relate better with each other. Are no strangers to each other's world".

This is not all, she asserts. "The couples can talk their heart out with common friends. Besides, they can depend upon mutual friends to sort out their problems in day to day existence".

The research further reveals that only four per cent of the couples sharing a drink at a bar or meeting through lonely heart ads walk down the aisle.

"In so many cases, it is nothing but infatuation," Mathur claims. "It dies before you get married or soon after you legalise your alliance".

Well kids, this is what the researchers believe in. If you wish to trust them, it is entirely your choice. We cannot say anything about it. Best of luck with your relationship.

New trends
Wear jewellery, but with caution

Hey kids, go in for some real nice jewellery. Before that, go through a list of deadly sins you should not be committing with your alluring bracelets and striking rings.

First of all, make sure you are not wearing too much of the stuff. Piling too many rings looks odd. “Ramola Sikand may be wearing so many of them in a serial on the television, but chances are that the crowd will not see you as a hip-chick. In fact, they might think you are superstitious or something”, fashion designer Shaheen Sharma asserts.

Passing her fair fingers through her highlighted tresses, she adds, “I am not saying you should not wear rings around your chiseled fingers at all for the fear of being branded superstitious. Put them on, but with style”.

Giving details, she reveals, “Chunky ones, readily available with the jewelers, should be worn alone. If you love thin ones, make sure you limit them to your fourth finger, else your center or pinkie fingers”.

Another thing to remember. The knick-knacks you wear in the morning and afternoon should essentially be different from stuff you put on for the evening interview.

“You should replace the basic stuff with more festive pieces for the after-dark events,” recommends Delhi-based Radhu, fashion designer. All the best.

What's in, what's out
Mix and match, but forget all about pierced ears

Mix and match is in. So folks do not just walk into a showroom and buy the combination being offered by the staff. Go in for something "more original". Use your own creativity to bring out the designer in you.

Pick up the garments in contrasting hues, instead of just the matching ones. They look cool in the summers of 2003. This is not all. Try something different. Wear a nice tie with fiery shirt.

Girls remember, putting a tie around ones neck is not just the prerogative of a man. You too can walk into your office wearing a tie. The effect will be electrifying. You can be sure of that.

Otherwise, wrap a long scarf around your neck even if you are wearing a T-shirt over trousers. You can also cover your face with it before driving down to college or office for protecting your fair visage from sun's onslaught. Another thing. You can don kurtas over jeans. The combo is the latest scream amidst damsels of the world.

Now, let's talk about what's out. Well, guys body piercing is simply no-no. So, please do not get your ears pierced in the new millennium. It is not healthy. Lack visual impact also. Go in for something more macho. After all it's a man's world.

Take care while it rains

The rainy season is here. But that does not mean that you can forget all about getting your face and arms tanned. Rather, you will have to take extra precaution.

Go in for a "water-proof" sunscreen. One that will not be washed away. Also remember, the natural your sunscreen, the better it is. The reason is not hard to see. Chemical ingredients cause sensitivity.

Another thing. Look for the Sun Protection Factor before you pick up an anti-tanning lotion. In our part of the country, go in for formulations with sun protection factor of 18 and above.

Remember to wear long white gloves if it is not raining. This is not all. In the evening or early morning, scrub arms with besan. Every now and then, you should rub fresh milk, nicely blended with besan, kacchi haldi, lemon juice and bajra powder, for getting rid of the tany.
