City Centre project suspended
Corruption rampant in LIT: chairman
Ludhiana, June 30
Putting an official stamp on corruption prevalent in Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), the newly appointed chairman of the trust today said he had to suspend the ambitious City Centre project, a baby of the LIT, in view of the corruption rampant in the department.

Mother, son commit suicide
Sahnewal, June 30
Both mother and son died on the spot after consuming poison as they were fed up with the routine family dispute, at Barwala village, near Sahnewal, last evening. Their bodies have been sent for post mortem. A case has been registered under Section 306 and 34, IPC, against the husband and father-in-law and the alleged accused remanded in police custody for one day.

Charging the senior officers of local traffic police with being hand in glove with the self-styled auto-rickshaw unions, the Local Bus Operators Union has called for a vigilance probe into the unholy alliance which was working to the detriment of the local mini bus operators.

PUDA colonies lack basic amenities
Ludhiana, June 30
Residents of many colonies developed and maintained by the Punjab Urban Development and Planning Authority (PUDA), including Sector 32 and 32-A on the Chandigarh Road here, have been left in lurch by the PUDA administration which has not provided basic amenities like sanitation, upkeep of roads, water supply, sewerage and streetlighting to the residents.

Poll vows not kept, say pensioners

The Government Pensioners’ Association has flayed the Punjab Government for not keeping poll promises made in the election manifesto on the eve of Punjab Assembly elections in February last.

Pensioners Bhavan panel: names sought

Mr B.R. Kaushal, president, Punjab State Pensioners’ Confederation, and Col H.S. Kahlon have asked all associations working for the welfare of pensioners in the district to furnish names of their representatives to be taken on the management committee of local Pensioners’ Bhavan by July 4, failing which the formation of the committee would be finalised on the basis of names available with various bodies.

AIATF condemns attack on Army camp
Ludhiana, June 30
The All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) has condemned the fidayeen attack on an Army camp in Jammu division in which 14 army jawans were killed. A meeting of the front, presided over district chief Anil Sharma, paid tributes to the martyrs and observed two-minutes silence in their memory.

Senior leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) yesterday claimed that the organisation was engaged in "social reconstruction and social awakening". Addressing the concluding function at the three-week training camp of the RSS volunteers at the local Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School last evening, the RSS leaders underlined the urgency of taking up the nationalist issues on a priority.

Agitated over the inability of the district police to arrest the mother-in-law and sister-in-law of an alleged dowry victim in New Chandan Nagar, relatives of the deceased girl staged a dharna outside the Civil Hospital here today.

Higher Education Minister Harnam Dass Johar has hailed the “victory” of the Congress in the panchayat elections as a clear-cut mandate in favour of the anti-corruption drive of Capt Amarinder Singh and a verdict against the rampant corruption in the government led by former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

PMET RESULT
They are second time lucky

Try, try again. This holds true for a number of candidates who appeared for the Punjab Pre-Medical Entrance Test (PMET) conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences yesterday. Though they failed in their attempt last year, they did not give up and devoted one full year to self-study and private coaching. Their efforts finally bore fruit when they got good ranks in the same test this year, the results of which were declared this morning on the Internet.

Girls outshine boys in BA III exam
Ludhiana, June 30
The results of BA final examinations conducted by Panjab University are out and girls have outshone boys in obtaining top positions.
Shivani Mahajan of the SDP College for Women has stood first in the college by securing 1850 out of 2400 marks while Monica has been placed in the second position with 1749 marks and Neha in the third position with 1745 marks.

Bhangra team back from Russia

“When you landed in Russia the weather was cold, but your bhangra and the enthusiasm, and warmth of your colourful dresses has made the weather warm.” These words were uttered by Yuri Gorianouv, president of the International Festival for Folk Arts and Folk Crafts, in Novgarad city of the Russian Federation in praise of the performance of Indian bhangra team.

Mushaira held in memory of sant
Ludhiana, June 30
The management committee of the Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission organised a mushaira, Yaad-e-Darshan, in the memory of Sant Darshan Singh at Nehru Sidhant Kendra yesterday night. Kirpal Ashram also helped the mission in organising the mushaira. It continued till late hours.

City doctor invents device to revive babies
Ludhiana, June 30
In a rare achievement, a city physician has developed and patented a design with the help of his Delhi-based associate for the resuscitation of newborn babies. The two have been awarded a patent for meconium connector (Designer no. 190320 in class 24-01).
