Bhangra team back from Russia
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, June 30
“When you landed in Russia the weather was cold, but your bhangra and the enthusiasm, and warmth of your colourful dresses has made the weather warm.” These words were uttered by Yuri Gorianouv, president of the International Festival for Folk Arts and Folk Crafts, in Novgarad city of the Russian Federation in praise of the performance of Indian bhangra team.

The local bhangra team had gone to Russia to perform at the International Festival for Folk Arts and Crafts organised at Novgarad earlier this month.

This was disclosed by the bhangra team of a local manch that returned to Ludhiana after 20 days of hectic performance in various cities of Russia. The bhangra team visited the country at the invitation of the Cultural Ministry of Federation.

The Indian team’s performance was applauded and senior officials of the federation honoured the artistes. The public also enjoyed and danced with the Indian artistes on the stage. Russian print and electronic media highlighted the Indian show with one newspaper terming it as ‘historic’.

Artistes not only performed on the stage and in the auditoriums but also in the open — road crossings and streets of towns and villages. The Indian team displayed its art in a dozen or more shows daily from June 5 to 9.

They also joined a special camp in the city of Arbhagalsk in which three dozen artiste groups from Europe, Turkey, Portugal, Finland and other countries also took part.

Which impressed the Russians as well as non-Russian participants was how Indians performed in bare feet and clad in a single shirt and chadra with so much vigour and enthusiasm. Their colourful costumes and smiles were the focus of attraction wherever they performed. The instruments of bhangra artistes — khuda, kato, chhika, bugchu, chimta and dhol charmed the crowds.

And what impressed the Indian artistes was the high standard and quality of auditoriums and stages and consciousness of the Russian society towards the preservation of their heritage.
