MDU gets record Rs 4.29 crore for 10th Plan

The University Grants Commission has made an all-time record allocation of Rs 4.29 crore to the Maharshi Dayanand University for the 10th Plan. The allocation, under the head Development Assistance, is based on the recommendations of the UGC’s visiting committee.

Two DU students charred to death in car mishap
New Delhi, June 27
In a bizarre incident, two Delhi University students were charred to death this morning as their car caught fire after it was hit by a truck near the Moti Nagar crossing. The police said that the fuel tank of the car caught fire from a spark due to the impact.

In its efforts to improve passenger amenities, the Railway Ministry has set up a cyber cafe on platform no 12 of New Delhi station. The cafe was inaugurated by the Union Railway Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar, in the presence of the Minister of State for Railways, Mr Bandaru Dattatraya, the Chairman, and the members of Railway Board and Managing Director of RailTel, here today.

11 booked in cases of crime against women
Faridabad, June 27
Eleven persons have been booked in connection with a case each of dowry death and gang rape in the district in the past 24 hours. According to reports, the police have registered a case against the husband, brother-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law of Guddi, who was allegedly murdered by them for not bringing enough dowry.

BJP to contest polls on its own in Haryana
Sonepat, June 27
The Haryana BJP has decided to contest the next Lok Sabha as well as Assembly elections on its own and would not enter into alliance with any party in the state. This was stated by Mr Sita Ram Singla, a former Haryana minister and a senior BJP leader while addressing a meeting of the party workers here yesterday.

The public distribution system seems to have become a subject of widespread public criticism in this city and elsewhere in the district following reports about the diversion of rationed commodities, particularly levy sugar, foodgrain and kerosene, to the black market instead of reaching the ration card holders having yellow and pink colour cards for whom it is meant.

MCD plan to desilt drains
New Delhi, June 27
With the monsoon likely to keep its date with the city, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which was to wind up the desilting work by the 15th of this month, is finally getting its act together. The Corporation has prepared an action plan for desilting the drains in its jurisdiction.

Residents of Machhali village, about 17 km from the district headquarters, have heaved a sigh of relief with the hope that water supply will in all likelihood be resumed following the intervention of the district administration.

Six persons including three women lost their lives in various incidents in the district since Thursday. While three committed suicide, three others were run over by a train. According to police sources, a young woman of Bhadkhal village committed suicide by hanging herself in her house.

Heart & lung check-up camp till June 28

The Delhi Health Minister, Dr A. K. Walia, inaugurated a three-day free heart and lung check-up camp at the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Walia said, “In the past five years, the Delhi Government has improved its primary and secondary health care services but we are far behind in providing adequate tertiary care to the Delhiites”.
