Two plays staged by child artistes at Punjabi Bhavan last evening marked the conclusion of a 20-days drama workshop organised by the Art Theatre.
The programme began with a religious song penned by Karamjeet Grewal. This was followed by a choreography on the song ‘Sharara’ presented by Rabia, Ria, Tanya and Pavneet.

The first play of the show, Rajyan Raj Karendian, penned by Kewal Dhaliwal, had Abhishek as the king and Jaspreet as his minister. Both in the guise of common men go around the village to get an insight into the problems being faced by the residents. There they meet a farmer who talks about indebtedness. They also meet an old woman cursing the army commandants for their inability to get any information regarding her only son who has gone to fight a battle, but has not returned home. They also come across a frog that narrates the problems being faced by the wild animals due to deforestation.

When the king and his minister in the same guise take a round of the their court, they find a common man being tortured by the inspectors for not paying them their monthly incentives. On being threatened that a complaint will be made to the king, the inspectors catch hold of the king and his minister and beat them up badly.

At this point of time, the anchor, Harshdeep, acting as a parrot, makes appearance and says, “Kingdoms thriving on false proclamations cannot sustain for long.”

Mandeep and Lawrence played the role of inspectors, Lilly acted as the old woman, Jaskaran played the role of farmer and Prince mimicked frog.

In the second play, Hai Ni Dhiye Morniye, penned by Dr Sadhu Singh, kids decide to enact marriage of a ‘gudda’ and ‘guddi’. The roles were played by Ravneet and Jatinder, respectively. The play highlighted the menace of dowry. Neeru acted as the mother-in-law, Rabia acted as anchor. Sara, Shweta, Sana and Lilly played side roles. Rajkumar, Karamjit and Abhishek produced background sounds.

The programme concluded with bhangra and giddha performances. Mr H.S.
