Job scam: BJP men may be grilled Hamirpur, June 16 Meanwhile, a special investigation team of the department continued its operation and grilled many persons stated to be responsible for getting jobs for their near and dear ones. Highly placed sources in the department said the team might summon at least six leaders of the BJP and two journalists of state for interrogations as they had manipulated the government machinery for getting jobs for their relations or had approached the Chairman in this connection. The source said though the Chairman had named many leaders of the BJP and the Congress and two journalists for seeking favour from him, in the first phase leaders of the BJP, including former ministers and MLA’s would be interrogated. |

3 killed as car falls into khud Kangra, June 16 Mr O.P. Jamwal, DSP, said five persons, including the driver, were on their way to Ranital to receive the local MLA, Mr Surender Chaudary, when their car rolled down the khud leaving two persons dead on the spot. Another person died on the way to the local subdivisional hospital. The dead have been identified as Raj Kumar Chaudary (47), brother of the MLA, Satish Kumar (35), of Kangra and Parshoutam Singh (45) of Purana Kangra. Mr Shami, a local resident, was seriously injured and was referred to Dr R.P. Government Medical College Hospital, Dharamsala, hospital sources said. The bodies were taken to the Dr R.P. Government Medical College for post-mortem. All shops and business establishments remained closed here as mark of respect to the departed souls. Dr Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Kangra, told this correspondent that an ex gratia of Rs 10,000 was given to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 5,000 to the next of kin of each injured. 11 fresh gastro cases in Dhugli
Bilaspur, June 16 According to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr T.K. Roy, in all 24 gastro patients were admitted at the zonal hospital here. He claimed that the condition of all patients was satisfactory. A woman in her late 90s who was suffering from gastroenteritis had died on Saturday night at the zonal hospital. She belonged to Dhugli village. Dr Roy said fresh samples of the water from the sources around the village had been sent again for laboratory tests. He said the preliminary tests had revealed that the drinking water in the village was not fit for human consumption and had led to gastric problems. The CMO said a regular supply of the necessary medicines was being provided to the villagers and a medical team had been stationed at Dhugli. This is the only district in the hill state where gastro cases had been reported despite the shortage of drinking water in various parts of the state due to the drying up of natural water sources.

63 buffaloes die of
mysterious disease Chamba, June 16 According to official reports received here, the carcasses of these animals were buried in the alpine pasturelands due to the mysterious disease. The livestock belonged to the nomad Gujjar families whose principal vocation is to rear buffaloes. A team of veterinary experts from the College of Veterinary Sciences, Chowdhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, visited the affected area to examine the disease which affected the livestock, especially the buffaloes. The doctors collected some samples to ascertain the symptoms of the disease and to conduct experiments at the university laboratories at Palampur. So far, 975 livestock, including buffaloes, have been vaccinated by the Veterinary Department in and around the affected areas of Kihar sector which include Bhandal, Sanghni and Gharat Nala on the borders of Chamba district. As many as 3,500 injections along with a sufficient stock of medicines has been transported to the affected belt to combat the mysterious disease, the official reports said. Besides, other allied agencies have also been pressed into service to control the outbreak of the disease. |

Corpn turnover crosses 400 cr Shimla, June 16 Addressing the inaugural session of the annual conference of the State Food and Civil Supplies Corporation employees here today, Mr Singhi Ram, Civil Supplies Minister, said the public distribution system
(PDS) had been strengthened to provide relief to the people living below the poverty line. He urged the employees to ensure a proper distribution of ration to the weaker sections of society so that they benefited from the schemes under which foodgrains were being supplied at subsidised rates. He appreciated the efforts of the corporation in serving the tribal areas, where the people were largely dependent on the

Three engineers’ bail extended till June 21 Hamirpur, June 16 The judge, however, directed the engineers to co-operate with the Vigilance Department in investigation of the case. The Vigilance Department had registered a case against these officers following complaints that they had repaired their machinery from a firm only and that too by obtaining three quotations of the same person with separate names but with the same telephone number on the letter heads. Sources in the Vigilance Department told The Tribune today that the department had already made big headway in the case and it would arrest the officers once the permission was granted by the court. |

Watershed projects to get priority Nurpur, June 16 Mr Mahajan said the gram panchayats would get more powers and all 70 block development offices (BDO) were being computerised. About the development of his Nurpur Assembly constituency, Mr Mahajan said his top priorities were upgrading the subdivisional civil hospital, setting up an ITI in Nurpur town, providing more facilities and staff in Government Arya Degree college and economic rehabilitation of Nurpur town. |

Summer’s first rain in Kangra Shimla, June 16 According to official reports here, the brief spell of rain brought down the day temperatures that had touched a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius. The weather office reported 3 mm of rain till 4 pm. The capital too witnessed a brief spell of rain for the second successive day today. The maximum temperature recorded here today was 27.5 degrees while the minimum was 14.6 mm. With overcast skies, more rain is expected later in the evening. There were also reports of rain from the upper Himachal areas of Kotgarh, Jhubbal, Naldehra, Kufri and other places. However, Una in the hill state recorded the maximum of 42.9 degrees, the highest in the state, while Hamirpur, too, reeled under 40 degrees.

LCP meets on June 22 Shimla, June 16 The meeting will be held at 11.30 hours at the ruling party’s lounge of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. The Budget session of the Assembly commences on June 23 and would continue till July 21 with a recess from July 5 to 13. The Budget estimates for the current financial year would be presented in the Assembly by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who also holds the Finance portfolio on June 26. In all, there would be 16 sittings during the session.

Student drowned Kangra, June 16 According to the police, Pardeep Kumar, a student at Shogi, had come to the town along with his two classmates to appear in an examination. He had gone to take a bath in Baner khad when he drowned there. The police said the two youths, who were accompanying Kumar, informed the police about the accident. Kumar’s body was recovered today and sent for post-mortem. Kumar was a resident of Balkroopi Jogindernagar.
