Verma okays helpline for people in distress Highlights * 24 hour suicide helpline to be based in GMCH. * Schools asked to identify two teachers each who will act as counsellors. * Produce articles on how to tackle stress. * GMCH asked document all suicide cases and suggest preventive steps. Chandigarh, June 16 A decision to this effect was taking in a meeting of senior officers presided over by UT Administrator Justice O.P. Verma (retd). Justice Verma said the staff manning the suicide helpline should be properly trained. The staff would be effective and useful only if they were well trained and sensitive. Their first response to a caller could either save the caller or frustrate him or her to take the drastic step. This helpline could eventually turn in a multi disciplinary task force represented by medical professionals, social, legal and educational experts. He said the helpline could be named “Aasha”. Once this helpline was made functional, very wide publicity may be given for its use. Suggesting the long-term remedial measures, Justice Verma said that there should be a thorough study of suicide cases in Chandigarh and the Medical College should document all cases of suicides in Chandigarh. He said after properly analysing the data by psychiatrists, a long-term plan should be prepared to take suitable preventive measures. Justice Verma said to deal with the cases of students under stress especially in the crucial exams, counselling should be encouraged in educational institutions. He said regular parent-teacher meetings should be made compulsory in schools and colleges and psychiatrists and other professionals should be invited such meetings to give counselling to the students and help them fight emotional stress. He said help of the media should also be sought to educate the public regarding ways and means of fighting stress. The Administrator said the Education Department should form a panel of eminent writers who should produce articles on career counselling tackling stress situations. Principals of the institutions should identify students undergoing stress during examination days and arrange for their counselling through their teachers. Such students could also be referred to trained counsellors in this field. Justice Verma said outdoor games were real stress busters. More and more students should be motivated to play outdoor games to tackle stress. He said parents, principals and teachers should remain extra vigilant during examinations months of March , April and May and provide appropriate counselling to those undergoing stress and strain and resultant depression.
