VB seeks disciplinary action against erring cops

The Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau has, in a strong-worded letter to the district police authorities, demanded serious disciplinary action against some police officials who had accompanied a ‘wanted’ cop Paramjit Singh to the Civil Hospital yesterday.

Basmati set to make a comeback 
Ludhiana, June 15
Basmati is all set to stage a comeback in all districts of Punjab in a big way with the active involvement of major corporate houses. Under the diversification programme of the state, basmati has been identified as one of the potential crops for this kharif season. The cultivation of the crop is being carried out in a big way in traditional as well as non-traditional areas under the Contract Farming Programme (CFP).

Baba Bedi: Akali unity unprincipled
Ludhiana, June 15
Baba Sarbjot Singh Bedi, convener, Panthic Morcha and president, Gurmit Sidhant Pracharak Sant Samaj, today assailed the unity between the Shiromani Akali Dal led by Mr Parkash Singh Badal and the Sarb Hind Akali Dal led by Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra and described the same as unprincipled. The unity was meant to bring about the dynastic rule of one family.

Shiv sainiks burn effigy of terrorism

Activists of Shiv Sena (Hindustan) today took out a protest march in the city and later burnt an effigy of terrorism to voice their concern against the recent developments in which head priest of Akal Takht had declared Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala as a martyr.

Transporters allege harassment

The local transporters are a harassed lot with a spate of challans being issued to them allegedly on trumped-up violations of the Motor Vehicles Act by officials of the Transport Department, particularly the District Transport Officer (DTO).

Delightful performances by students

The city people witnessed the living example of the age old ‘parampara of guru-shishya’ for the first time here last evening. The function was held to conclude the two-week workshop the artistes had begun in vocal music, kathak, Bharat Natyam, sitar, bhangra and jhoomer.

Hundreds take B.Ed  entrance test
Ludhiana, June 15
Hundreds of students from all over Punjab took B.Ed entrance examination today conducted by Guru Nanak Dev University this year. The two-and-a-half hour examination had 300 questions of one mark each. The students seemed worried as there was negative marking too for wrong answers.

‘Sada Chir Jeevo' staged
Ludhiana, June 15
A light-and-sound-programme ''Sada Chir Jeevo'' was staged at the open auditorium of the Gujjarkhan Complex, Model Town, yesterday. Produced by the Mata Triptaji Charitable Trust, Chandigarh, it was presented at Ludhiana by Gurmit Gian Missionary College under the chairmanship of Mr Inderjit Singh Rana.

Medical camp held
Amloh, June 15
As many as 200 patients were examined by Dr D.S. Khangoora and Dr Gurmeet Kaur during a medical camp organised by the Yuvak Sewawan Club at Nalina Kalan village. This was stated by chief of the club, Mr Swarn Singh Gorkha, in a press note here today.

Tony Mahajan XI take lead in cricket meet
Ludhiana, June 15
Tony Mahajan XI, Ludhiana, beat Nicks XI, Patiala, by 50 runs and took 1-0 lead in the four-match series (u-15), sponsored by the HDFC Standard Life Insurance, being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at the Arya College for Boys ground here today. The second match will be played here tomorrow while two other matches will be conducted at Patiala next week.
