Modern lifestyle aggravating problem of New Delhi, June 13 In many areas of the country, water is the main cause of stone formation. Food habits and the body’s micro organisations causes the formation of calcium oxalate monohydrate stones. This is the hardest and does not break up easily. Lithofrypsy technique has failed in such cases, say experts. This treatment leaves a part of the stone in the kidney. Though lithofrypsy was very popular in the eighties, it was not very successful in India. Now, the kidney stones are being fully removed without operation with the help of the holmium laser technique. At the North Point Hospital, Panchsheel Park, Dr Anupam Bhargava has been using this method successfully. Holmium laser dissolves the stone, which then is exited through urination. For this treatment, a flexible tube fitted with telescope is inserted into the kidney. Since it can target 0.8 mm area, the holmium laser does not destroy the body tissues and the patient can resume work the very next day. The treatment requires a single
operation. |
