Jaundice threat in Khanna
Our Correspondent

Khanna, June 13
Khanna town is reportedly in the grip of jaundice epidemic with almost every colony reporting patients suffering from jaundice. Though no data is available with the health authorities, but private clinics alone have reported over 70 cases of ‘jaundice’ during the past few days. The local Civil Hospital too has seen an influx of patients from areas that do not have safe drinking water.

Senior district officials admit that though most patients go for treatment to private clinics and only some to the Civil Hospital and hence there is no data available on patients who were suffering due to contaminated water. Some water samples taken from the posh area of the city like New Abadi and Lalheri Road had failed the test. Four specific samples taken from these areas yesterday failed. Reports of samples collected from the slum area like Guru Nanak Nagar are still awaited.

The health of more than one lakh inhabitants of the city is at risk just because of the absence of any foolproof system of chlorination of drinking water and lack of cleanliness. The tube wells supplying water to the city have no ‘dousers’ through which the chlorine mixture or powdered chlorine is injected into the water. In all tube wells of the city, the administration is using bleaching powder as a alternative but the tube well operators who perform this task of dispensation are unaware about the quantity required.

The most affected areas from jaundice include Guru Nanak Nagar. Bhupinder Singh of Guru Nanak Nagar said he and many other persons of his locality were suffering from water-borne diseases. He said the water being supplied by the Municipal Council was not clean. Mr Garcha, a Professor of chemistry said the use of bleaching powder as an alternative to chlorine to purify water was not recommended as the bleaching powder contained agents like calcium and magnesium in it. Mr Najar Singh, Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Khanna, who took over last week, said he had ordered that the entire water system be cleaned and water tanks be serviced.
