Injured gymnast helpless, hopeful
Poonam Batth

Amrinder, a student of DAV College, Sector 10, has achieved distinction as a gymnast at the national and state levels. At the age of 18, he nurtures a dream to represent his state and country at the international level. But as of now this seems to be a distant reality as his family does not have the finances required to meet his aspirations.

Hailing from a modest family of Bassi Daulat Khan village in Hoshiarpur district, his father, Mr Harbhajan Singh, employed as a senior assistant in the Punjab Government, and his mother, now settled in the Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra, have a major role to play in his achievements.

Amrinder, who belongs to a family of sports lovers drew inspiration from his grand father, Mr Sant Ram, who was a wrestler. He was declared the allround best gymnast when he won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the open state-level gymnastics championship, held at Chandigarh in August 2001. He also won bronze and gold medals during the inter-state school tournaments and state gymnastics championships in Chandigarh between 1997-2000. Besides, he has also participated in the national-level gymnastics championships held in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.

But as luck would have it, Amrinder injured his right knee while participating in one such national-level championship at Gurdaspur in November 2002. His father said he was being treated for his ruptured ligaments at the Sector 16 General Hospital, but since he did not get much relief, the doctors referred him to the Military Hospital, Chandimandir, and said the treatment would cost anything between Rs 70,000 and Rs 75,000.

Talking to TNS, his father, Mr Harbhajan Singh, expressed his inability to meet the expenses as he was already under heavy debt. He said while his elder son Arvinder, who is doing his BAMS course, is also an athlete, his younger sons, Harvinder and Varinder, are also into gymnastics, karate and basketball. “Though me and my wife make all possible efforts to promote their talent, I do not have the resources to give them the best.”

Expressing his inability to take more loan without repaying the previous ones, Mr Harbhajan Singh has appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to grant him Rs 4-5 lakh from his discretionary quota. He has pleaded that he is unable to meet the expenditure on his children’s studies and sports activities, from his meagre source of income. He too is undergoing treatment following a recent accident.

Earlier, the gram panchayat of his village and the Block Development Officer (BDO) concerned had also urged the state government to sanction funds for promoting the talent of the boys.

While the Punjab Health Minister has recommended financial help, the same is yet to come from the Chief Minister.
