Police fires into air

Jalandhar, June 7
While the district police has arrested about 20  youngsters for having created trouble in the Buta Mandi and other places and it resorted to firing in the air to disperse mobs in Chuggitti and Guru Nanak Pura area, the city observed an almost complete bandh today in response to a call given by the Dalit Action Committee.

Meanwhile, the police today clarified that CRPF personnel were not deployed in any part of the city and the district as was projected by a section of media.

Almost all shops and establishments, except for government offices and banks, remained closed. Most of people put down their shutters out of fear, while others did it in response to the bandh call.

Police personnel fired about 25 rounds in the air to disperse groups of youngsters, which had also organised a road block at Chuggitti and which were  forcing people to put down the shutters of their establishments in Guru Nanakpura and Chuggitti area. No person, however, was injured in the incident.

BJP team to visit Jalandhar

Chandigarh, June 7
The general secretary of the Punjab unit of the BJP, Mr Harjit Singh Grewal, said today that a team of BJP ministers and leaders from Delhi would visit Jalandhar soon to resolve the issues that led to violence in Talhan and Jalandhar areas.

The President of the state unit of the BJP, Mr Brij Lal Rinwa, would reach Jalandhar tomorrow.

Criticising the registration of case against the BJP leader, Mr Vijay Sampla, by Jalandhar police, Mr Grewal said that the case should be immediately withdrawn. He said that the government was trying to politicise the issue deliberately. Asking the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to resign, Mr Grewal said that either the CBI or a judicial inquiry should be ordered to know what happened in Jalandhar district in the past two days.Back

 


SGPC sets up probe panel

Amritsar, June 7
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee today constituted a five-member fact-finding committee to probe the clash between Dalits and Jats at Talhan village.

In press release, issued here today, a spokesman of the SGPC said that the report would be submitted in a week.

Even before the submission of the report, the SGPC chief alleged that a Minister of the state government was responsible for the conflict.Back

 


Scribes alleges manhandling

Jalandhar, June 7
When the district administration failed to issue curfew passes to journalists and photographers by 2.30 pm here today, the journalists decided to court arrest after violating curfew at Guru Ravidas Chowk here. When they started proceeding towards the chowk, the police manhandled them.

They shouted slogans against the district administration and the police. The issue was resolved when they got their passes. Later, the journalists approached the Chief Minister with a complaint against the administration.
