Renowned ophthalmic surgeon Dr Deepak Khosla from Chennai will be available at the Fortis Heart Institute and Multi-Speciality Hospital here for eye consultation and surgical procedures on June 9 and 10.

Chandigarh lift ML Markan Trophy

Chandigarh, June 7
Chandigarh lads clinched the Under-17 ML Markan Trophy in the final of the three-day Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament which concluded today at PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar.

They outplayed Jalandhar on the basis of first innings lead of 60 runs. In the second innings played today, Chandigarh were bowled out for 227 runs. In reply, Jalandhar were 26 runs for the loss of one wicket at the end of the play.

For Chandigarh, Gurkirat, the opening batsmen, scored 64 runs, while his fellow opener batsman Siddharth scored 44 runs. Karanveer scored 23 runs, followed by Naresh who made 21, while Uday Kaul made 17.Vikramjeet and Rahul Venky bagged five wickets each.

Earlier in their first innings, Chandigarh made 299 runs for the loss of seven wickets, while in reply Jalandhar could manage 239 runs.

Piccadily-XI shine: A superb show by Arun Tuli, who claimed five wickets for 32 runs and scored 40 runs, helped Piccadily XI beat Chandigarh Sports Club by three wickets in a Division ‘A’ tie of the VIIth UT League Cricket Tournament for Kinetic Trophy played here today at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. CSC made 166 runs with Harinder Bawa top scoring with 46 runs. In reply, Piccadily-XI achieved the target in 33.3 overs with the loss of seven wickets.

In another match played at DAV School, Sector 8, High Court-XI defeated Bedi Cricket club by 24 runs. High Court-XI made 234 runs in 39.2 overs. In reply, Bedi XI were bundled out for 210 runs in 38 overs. In a Division ‘C’ match played at PEC cricket grounds, Haryana Toursim defeated AYC by three wickets. AYC were bowled out for 168 runs, while Haryana Tourism achieved the target in 24.4 overs with three wickets in hand.

In yet another tie, Garhwal Cricket Club defeated Surya Cricket Club by 49 runs.

Tennis meet: Ashutosh Singh of India made it to the second round of the qualifying rounds of the ITF Men Satellite Circuit Tennis Tournament, which began here today at Tennis Stadium, Sector 10. Other players who made it to the next round are: Nirmit Shetty, Anjan Viplav, Gurmehar Singh, Ashwin Sivaramakrishnan, Shivang Mishra, Arjun Talwar, Vijeyendra Laad, Jaco Mathew, Izreek Randhawa, Parantap Chaturvedi, Brian Hung, Varun Walia, Saurav Sukul, V. Menon, Arjun Goutham and Aditya Madkekar.

The next round matches of the qualifying rounds will be held tomorrow. The main draw matches will begin from June 9.

Shooting their way to glory

The efforts of Avneet Sidhu and Ramandeep Kaur in air rifle shooting have brought glory to Badal village in Muktsar district, Panjab University, and the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association during the past two years. Avneet and Ramandeep, a native of Bathinda, are in SAS Nagar to take part in the Punjab State Shooting Championship.

Daughters of farmers, they are good friends and have many things in common. They took to shooting while they were BCA first-year students at Dashmesh Girls College, Badal.

Avneet and Ramandeep were members of the Panjab University team that won the All-India Inter-Varsity Shooting Championship two years in a row. While Avneet shot 391/400, Ramandeep shot 374/400. In the 32nd National Games held in Hyderabad, Avneet shot 392/400 and was fourth in the senior category.

In the National Shooting Championship held in Bangalore in 2002, she shot 388/400. In the All-India Surender Kumar Memorial Shooting Meet, Avneet shot 390/400.

They have been practising for this year’s All-India Inter-Varsity Shooting championship. They also plan to take part in the World University Shooting Meet in Plsen, Czech Republic, in September.

Both girls want to go in for a professional career. They have started preparing for MBA entrance examinations of various universities.

Housing society case: inquiry officer changed

Chandigarh, June 7
The Chandigarh Administration has changed the inquiry officer to verify the records of Pink Rose Cooperative Housing Society. The new inquiry officer will be Mr Vivek Atray, Director, Information Technology, Chandigarh Administration. Mr Atray is an official on deputation from Haryana.

The Administration has decided to relieve Mr Sandhu of the responsibility of the inquiry as Mr Sandhu is a Punjab official and the matter involves middle- level IAS officers from Punjab. Sources said there would have been too much of pressure on Mr Sandhu and, therefore, the Administration had decided to replace him. They said the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, would issue formal orders to Mr Atray.
