Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 5
The Haryana Government has earmarked a sum of Rs 10 crore for Panchkula district under the Kandi project for the current financial year, of which Rs 5.5 crore will be spent on the construction of bridges, roads and link roads under the Rural Development Scheme.

This was stated at a district-level meeting held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Satwanti Ahlawat, today. The meeting was called to review the progress of various development activities going on under the Kandi project.

It was also stated that during the current financial year, seven sub-surface dams, five big water harvesters, 20 small water harvesters and 300 cattle sheds would be constructed. Farmers of the area would be encouraged to adopt crop diversification and would be imparted training in the cultivation of mushroom and off-season vegetables as part of the campaign being implemented in the state.

While presiding over the meeting, Ms Ahlawat directed the officers to take effective steps to ensure the active participation of common people in the Kandi project. Expressing her concern over the fast decreasing water table in the district, she stressed the need for creation of storage capacity for storm water, as it would not only meet the irrigation and drinking water needs, but also recharge the underground water table in the district.
