WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
Anti-tobacco lobby hitches its wagon to film stars
Tribune New Service

New Delhi, May 30
Being role models to people across the ages, the fashion and film personalities have been asked to play ambassadors to an anti smoking campaign. The Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) and the Indian Medical Association have asked the film and the fashion industry to desist from projecting tobacco and tobacco based projects. The appeal was made on the occasion of the ‘World No Tobacco Day’, which is being observed on May 31.

It was pointed out that tobacco in the form of bidis, pipe or chewing have been identified as major risk factors for heart attacks, bronchitis, cancer and strokes. Statistics reveal that six people succumb to diseases related to smoking every minute.

To help people quit smoking and rehabilitate them, a week long camp for smokers is being organised by the HCFI. The camp will be attended by allopathic, homeopathic and unani doctors apart from ayurvedic ones. In today’s meeting it was reflected that tobacco brands should not be allowed to sponsor fashion shows, or be associated with travel agencies, cafes and bistros. While studios have been asked to promote anti-smoking advertisements, film producers have been asked to certify at the end of each movie that no body on the production unit received free cigarettes, interest free loans and other freebies from tobacco companies.

The benefits of herbal smoking with emphasis on inhaling herbs like dalchini, chandan, tejpatta were also highlighted. Speaking on the occasion Dr. K K Aggarwal said, “you can double the chances of successfully quitting smoking by using nicotine replacement therapies like patches, lozenges and inhalers”. He added that tobacco and its products should be enlisted as drugs and sold by chemists on production of a certificate by an appropriate authority.

Meanwhile in a study conducted by a cancer hospital has claimed that neck and head cancers are on the decline owing to the awareness about risks of tobacco smoking and chewing. The data provided by the Dharamshila Cancer Hospital points out that 23 per cent of the cancers reported in 2002, were of the head and neck and are caused by tobacco.
