Some tips to ward off diseases this summer
Priyanka Gupta

New Delhi, May 29
The summer is back and so are summer diseases. Some precautions may help us ward off these diseases, which are mostly water-borne.
Accumulation of water on the roads and outside the houses promotes the growth of mosquitoes that spread diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Consumption of cut fruits or food from the roadside can prove disastrous.

Reports have revealed that exposure to sunlight for a long time at this time of the year can make the body temperature shoot up to 106 to 107 degree Celsius, causing brain fever and cardiac arrest.

There is also the chance of getting sunstroke with symptoms like drowsiness, headache, nausea, dizziness and abdominal pain. In Delhi, on an average, 12 persons die of sunstroke every year. Taking a lot of fluids while traveling can help fend this malady. Consuming boiled food would be the best. It is advised to avoid taking juices from roadside, especially sugarcane juice.

Dr Sudip Khanna, gastroenterologist, Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute, said, “During summers, it is always advised to consume boiled or filtered drinking water. Always remember to steam or boil the vegetables properly to kill the germs. Take a lot of fluids, at least 10-12 glass per day. Try to avoid direct sunlight for long. Summer fruits like papaya, watermelon, mango, falsa and banana should be added in your diet.”

Medical professionals also suggest to take ‘Electrol’ as a fluid thrice a day as it contains all contents needed by the human body. Apart from this, jaljeera, lemon juice and ‘bel’ juice can help as they contain precious vitamins. The food must be rich in fibre. Dal, curd, vegetables, chicken and ice creams would add balance to the diet. ‘

Dr K. K. Aggarwal, director of the Heart Care Foundation of India, said, “In summers, heat cramps and heat exhaustion can be beaten by consuming water with lemon, salt and sugar. But if a person is suffering from heat stroke, meaning fever without sweat, then it can be dangerous to the extent that it can cause death. If the temperature shoots up to 3-4 degree above normal, just sit under water. It’s necessary to wear light clothes and try to avoid direct sunlight for long. Food does not matter much but it should be hygienic and avoid taking warm things including pepper, tea, coffee and chilies.”

Information collected from different MCD hospitals and dispensaries shows that a total of 1,267 cholera cases and 69,139 cases of gastroenteritis, though sans any deaths, were reported during 2001
