Inayat, Ankita in last four

Ankita Singh, a student of Class VIII of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, defeated Qudrat Paul in straight sets to make her way to the last four of the girls under-14 section of the AITA Junior Tour Ranking Tennis Talent Series Meet which entered the second day here today at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium. Earlier, she defeated Anushika Kapoor in a pre-quarter final tie in a three-set thriller.

Results: Boys under-14 (quarterfinals) — Vijayant Malik bt Navdeep Singh 6-2, 6-4; Manav Dhawan bt Karan Uday Singh 6-2, 6-2; Shiva Sangwan bt Deepinder Singh 6-4, 6-2; Navinder Pal Singh bt Uday Karan S. Puniha 7-5, 6-2.

Girls under-14 (quarterfinal) — Inayat Khosla bt Shardha Singh 6-4, 6-4; Tanya Kapoor bt Renuka Keswani 6-3, 7-5; Alisha Talwar bt Navjot Saini 6-4, 6-4; and Ankita Singh bt Qudrat Paul 6-4, 6-2.

Boys under-18 (quarterfinal) — Arjun Talwar bt Vijayant Malik 6-1, 6-1; Tushar Garg bt Gurmehar Brar 6-0, 6-1; and Izreek Singh bt Manjit Singh 6-2, 6-3.

Mohali win

Mohali outplayed Minor District XI by 162 runs in the Punjab State Inter-distrcit Cricket Tournament (under-17) which concluded here today at the PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar.

In the second innings, Minor District were all out for 125 runs thanks to fine bowling by Ashutosh Pandit and Gagandeep who claimed four and three wickets, respectively.

Earlier, Mohali were all out for 237 runs in their second innings. While Mohali scored 176 runs in their first innings and Minor District were all out for 126 runs.

Inaugurated

An ultra-modern sports complex cum multi gym was inaugurated today in the office building of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation by Mr S.D. Bhambri, former Chief Secretary, Haryana. Bhambri, himself a keen badminton, squash and tennis player, said the setting up of such sports complex was an innovative idea and lauded the efforts of the corporation in utilising the basement in the best possible manner. He said the complex can be used by employees and officers of the corporation and other staff members. Later, Mr Bhambri played a badminton match with Mr B.R. Lal, Managing Director of the corporation. Mr M.S. Malik, DGP, Haryana, and the president of the Wrestling Federation of India, graced the occasion.

Rowing trials

The Chandigarh Rowing Association will hold trials to select the UT team for the national sub-junior and sprint rowing championship at Sukhna Lake on May 31. The events to be conducted are single sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs and coxless fours. Those interested should contact Col M. Berry, director of training and competitions, at the venue at 6.30 a.m. on May 31.

Tender Heart plans basketball academy

Tender Heart School, Sector 33, which has over the years given preference to varied sports activities, has now decided to focus on basketball as its main sport.

According to Mr Vikrant Suri, member of the school management, they would go in for a basketball academy for 12-14 age group. Mr Suri said, at present, they were holding a summer coaching camp which began on May 19 and will continue up to the second week of June. Nearly 75-80 trainees were having daily sessions which run from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm. The camp in charge Mr Ravinder Kumar, who is NIS qualified, says apart from regular students of the school, there were other trainees from nearby schools, who were being imparted rigorous training.

ADMINISTRATION

Arun Kumar takes charge

The new Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh, Mr Arun Kumar, a 1989 batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, joined duty here this afternoon, relieving Mr M. Ramsekhar of the charge. Mr Kumar joined around 4.00 p.m. He later told Chandigarh Tribune, “My agenda will be the same as decided by the Chandigarh Administration.

There will be no personal agenda. I will aim for providing a transparent administration to the people”.

In the morning, Mr Kumar met the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Virendra Singh, and the Home Secretary, Mr Raminder Singh Gujral, in the UT Secretariat.

Meanwhile, Mr Ramsekhar, a 1988 batch Haryana-cadre officer, rejoined his parent cadre this evening. A place of posting is yet to be decided for him. He served in Chandigarh for four years. His tenure was eventful as major changes in building bylaws in the city were allowed.
