Govt schools fare better than
private ones
Chandigarh, May 23
Three students from the city and its satellite townships shared the top honours by securing 92.2 per cent marks in the Class XII examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, the results of which were declared today. They are — Anu Bhasin of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37; Kritika Mohan of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27 (both from the non-medical stream); and Barinder Singh, also of Bhavan Vidyalaya. (commerce stream).

Supneet tops in SAS Nagar with 91 pc marks

Supneet Singh Wadhwa of Shivalik Public School, Phase VI, has topped the township with 91 per cent marks in the Class XII CBSE examination. Gupta files application for regular bail
Chandigarh, May 23
Pleading that the corruption case registered against him and the co-accused — suspended UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class) S.S. Bhardwaj — by the CBI was false, fabricated and baseless, suspended Jalandhar’s District and Sessions Judge, R.M. Gupta today filed a regular bail application in a local court. The application will come up for hearing tomorrow.

Wildcat architects rule the roost in Kurali
Kurali, May 23
Thousands of residential and commercial buildings constructed in Kurali township since 1972 are unauthorised. All building plans or designs submitted to the local Municipal Council by the so-called architects during the past three decades have violated provisions of the Architects Act, 1972 that prohibits those designers not registered with the Council of Architecture to use the title and style as architects with any prefix or suffix to their designation and practice thereof.

Three held for murdering taxi drivers
Rajpura, May 23
A failed businessman and his two accomplices have been arrested on charges of murdering two taxi drivers and stealing a Toyota Qualis. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Paramraj Singh Umranangal, while disclosing this said the accused who had been arrested in the case were Amrik Singh and Sukhchain Singh of Dhandhra village in Ludhiana and Kamalpreet, alias Goldy, also of Ludhiana.

60-yr-old man waylaid, injured
Chandigarh, May 23
The city police today claimed to have solved a case of attempted dacoity within 12 hours. at least five youths, all unemployed, were reportedly arrested by a team from the Sector 36 police station this evening for seriously injuring a 60-year-old resident of Sector 24, Garib Dass, after trying to rob him in the wee hours of the morning.

Taking up a petition filed by a Naya Gaon resident, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed that the order cancelling the no-objection certificate issued to a petitioner would remain ineffective for three months.

Mr Rana Gurmit Sodhi, President of the Chandigarh Olympic Association and Political Adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister, has been included in the Indian Olympic Association delegation which is going to bid for the Commonwealth Games for the year 2010. Structures demolished, land given to Railways

Four religious structures, along with 17 houses, were today demolished in the Faidan and Jhhumru villages of the Union Territory (located near Sector 48) on the Punjab and Union Territory border and the acquired land was handed over to the Railways for laying the Chandigarh- Ludhiana railway line.
