Sonnet Club move into semi-final

Sonnet Club defeated Air Sahara by five wickets to enter the semi-final of the Goswami Ganesh Dutt Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Khalsa College ground.
Sonnet will take on the winners of the match between defending champions Indian Airlines and Lal Bahadur Shastri Club in the semi-final.

Sonnet won the toss and put Sahara into bat. Sahara hoisted a total of 216 for 9 in 40 overs mainly due to the fine batting performances of skipper Sunil Sharma (46, 9x4 33b), Deepak Bhatnagar (36), Anshul Lamba (43, 2x4, 1x6, 43b), Umesh Chaudhary (23) and Pradeep Chawla 22.

Sahara, who were 121 for 2 after 20 overs, lost some quick wickets later to slump to a rather modest total. The star-studded Sonnet chased the victory target in 38.5 overs by losing five wickets. Mayank Sidana put on a swashbuckling batting performance to score 82 off 99 balls with the help of ten boundaries.

There will be no match on Thursday. Indian Airlines will take on Lal Bahadur Shastri Club on Friday.

Lala Hari Ram Cricket from May 25

The seventh Lala Hari Ram Aggarwal Day-Night Cricket Carnival will be held from May 25 at the Karnail Singh Stadium. President of the tournament committee Ashok Aggarwal said 16 top teams from the Capital will participate in the tournament.

Delhi BJP president Madan Lal Khurana released the entry forms on Thursday. Entries close on May 21 at 1994, Sona Bazar, Bhagirath Place, Delhi-6 or at mobile 23868050 or 9811085357.

The tournament will carry a cash award of Rs 1,11,000 for the winners and 51,000 for the runners-up. The losing semi-finalists will be given Rs 21,000 each as cash rewards.

Kaif Mohd hits century

A fine century by Kaif Mohd (135) and a devastating bowling spell of 3 for 55 by Raghav Kakkar helped Mayapuri Club beat Gush Club by two wickets in a DDCA Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Gyan Bharti school ground.

Scores: Gush Club: 237 for 8 in 45 overs (Vidur Sethi 69, Varun Sudan 63, Ragav Kakkar 3 for 55, Pranoy Chakravarti 3 for 56).

Mayapuri: 238 for 43.5 overs (Kaif Mohd 135, Mukul Dangar 21, Ajay Chauhan 4 for 70).

In another match, Amandeep Singh slammed 165 and Rajeev Gupta struck 92 to help Inborn beat Montfort School by 196 runs at the Montfort ground.

Scores: Inborn Club: 336 for 4 in 45 overs (Amandeep Singh 165, Rajeev Gupta 92, Vijender Tokas 35 n o, Ansul Vijay 2 for 56).

Montfort School: 140 all out in 33 overs (Saksham Jain 28, Rajat Sharma 4 for 38, Dixit Kathuria 3 for 23).

National Yoga Championship in Delhi

New Delhi, May 14
The third National Yoga Championship for junior and senior boys and girls will be held at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on May 16 and 17. The championship is being organised by the Yoga Confederation of India in association with the Yoga Association of Delhi.

Over 300 boys and girls, representing 16 states, are expected to participate in the meet.

Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi will inaugurate the championship while former Test player and Member of Parliament Kirti Azad will preside over the function.

The championship will be organised in Olympic Yoga, artistic yoga, rhythmic yoga and artistic pair yoga. The Indian yoga team will be selected on the basis of the performance in the national meet.

The Indian team is slated to participate in the Yoga World Cup, to be held in Porto City (Portugal) on July 18 and 20. A month-long coaching camp will be organised for the Indian team at the Talkatora stadium from June 16. OSR

Inter-state soccer transfer from today

New Delhi, May 14
The annual inter-state soccer transfer will begin tomorrow. The new regulations regarding the status and transfer of players, approved by the special Annual General Body of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF), which came into force last season, will be enforced with immediate effect as advised by the players status committee of the AIFF to state secretaries.

There are two categories of players — amateur and non-amateur (professional) — and two windows (periods) for transfer — May 15 to 31 and October 15 to 31.31.

The transfer under the old system will be illegal and in violation of the FIFA regulations. The transfer of the players will become effective from June 1 and from any date thereafter.

The player having taken inter-state transfer during the first window will not be allowed to seek transfer during the second window. All transfer of players on loan shall be dealt with in the same way as the inter-state transfer and the player transferred on loan cannot return to the same club or be transferred to another club during the same season. No transfer on loan will be accepted or made after February 28.

Athletic Circuit meet put off

The first National Athletic Circuit, scheduled to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on May 18, has been postponed.
According to Amateur Athletic Federation of India secretary Lalit Bhanot, the postponement was necessitated as the coaches and experts felt that the athletes had not trained adequately to be ready for the competition. He said the circuit will now be rescheduled.
