Man, daughter electrocuted
Case against UT Electricity Department

As nine-year-old Amandeep played in the courtyard of his house at Badheri village, he was unaware of the fact that people had assembled at his house to mourn the death of his father and elder sister, who were electrocuted this morning. Amandeep’s mother is struggling for her life at the PGI.

Suicide bid: abetment charge withdrawn
SAS Nagar, May 14
The police has withdrawn the charge of abetment to suicide against the teachers who had allegedly beaten up a girl student of Sant Isher Singh Public School here.

Afternoon water supply to continue: Mayor
Chandigarh, May 14
Even at the peak of summer, city residents are getting 150 gallons of water on a per capita basis as against the national average of 45 gallons. Claiming this, Mr Swaran Singh Kanwal, Superintending Engineer of the Public Health wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, told Chandigarh Tribune that the water supply to the city as on date was at least 64 million gallons per day.

VB exhumes remains of tiger
Chhat Bir (Patiala), May 14
Following investigations into the alleged smuggling of animal hides and bones particularly of lions, tigers and panthers, a team of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau exhumed the remains of a Royal Bengal Tiger carcass from the animal graveyard on the Chhat Bir zoo premises today.

City resident held for defrauding NRI
Chandigarh, May 14
A city resident was arrested by the Chandigarh police today for cheating a Canada-based NRI of Rs 12 lakh in a property deal relating to a house in Phagwara. The arrested was identified as Mr Sukhpreet Singh Rana of Sector 49 here.

Sector 22 booth broken into, one held
Chandigarh, May 14
Confusion prevailed in the Sector 22 Shastri Nagar market around midnight when as many as six armed persons, allegedly broke into booth No. 296.Although no case had been registered till midnight, the police seized two vehicles loaded with goods looted from the booth.

Judge still on the run
Chandigarh, May 14
For the fourth consecutive day, the local Judicial Magistrate, S.S. Bhardwaj, continued to evade arrest. An anonymous caller rang up the Police Control Room (PCR) to say that the Judicial Magistrate was sitting in the office of a senior official of the PGI.

Will PU VC get an extension?

Windmills of rumours are minting unlimited gossip at Panjab University as to whether Prof K.N. Pathak will get an extension as the Vice-Chancellor or not? It is important to point out at the outset that around this time in a Vice-Chancellor’s tenure, a search committee shortlisting likely candidates for the next VC is the first big news to hit one’s ears. Trade unions call for nationwide strike
Chandigarh, May 14
Left trade unions have called for an all-India industrial strike on May 21 to demand the reversal of the economic policy. This was announced by All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Gurudas Dasgupa at a press conference here today. He said the next phase of the strike would be for changing the government.

Sukhna Lake and its catchment area
SUKHANA lake was constructed in 1958 across the Sukhna choe. The lake spreads on the foothills of the Shivalik mountain range and is a major tourist attraction. The reservoir of the lake is in the shape of a bean seed bounded by a 12.8 m high rockfill earthen dam. At the time of its construction, its pondage capacity was 10.74 million cubic metres with 2.28 sq. km spread area.

An invitation by The Tribune, asking its readers to join in a debate to save the Sukhna lake, received a good response. Various opinions and suggestions have been tossed up. So far 35 persons, several of whom are authorities on the subject of siltation, have expressed their ideas. Presented here are some more responses which are representative in nature. While thanking all the participants, we regret our inability to publish all the contributions for want of space. With this, we end the ‘‘Save Sukhna Lake’’ debate.

Hansraj Public School tops in quiz
Chandigarh May 14
About 17 schools of the city participated in the mega inter-school quiz contest held at Shivalik Public School in Sector 41 today. Hansraj Public School in Sector 6, Panchkula, got the first position in quiz. The second position was bagged by St Annes School in Sector 32 and the third position went to St Stephens School, Sector 45.

As many as 32 students participated in the Inter-Shivalik Poetry Recitation contest, organised at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today. The contest was open to students of classes VIII to XII. The themes were patriotism, nature and mother.

A number of students who took the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination at Kendriya Vidyalya, Sector 29, here on May 11 have also complained that the mathematics question paper was distributed late at their centre, leading to a loss of about 25 minutes.

92 cops shifted

After reshuffling around 400 lower level cops, who had so far been “managing” preferred postings in the Chandigarh Police, the top brass today ordered inter unit transfers. At least 92 Sub-Inspectors (SIs) and Assistant Sub Inspectors (ASIs) were today transferred in a single order.

Sale of unchlorinated water banned

The UT Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Ramsekhar, has banned the sale of unchlorinated drinking water obtained from unauthorised sources. The sale of ice and aerated water prepared in unhygienic conditions has also been banned.

Dogra takes over as ADRM

Mr Dyal Dogra has taken over as the new Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), Ambala Railway Division. Mr Dogra, a product of DAV School Sector 8 and later DAV College, Sector 10, is a 1980 batch Indian Railway Services officer.
