Gill Sports Club win trophy

Ludhiana, May 10
The Gill Sports Club of Ghawadi prevailed over the Chahal Club of Dhangora 1-0 to lift the trophy in the first Taj Resorts six-a-side Hockey League Tournament which concluded at Mata Sahib Kaur Stadium at Jarkhar village, about 15 km from here today. The all important goal was scored by Gurmeet Singh in the 10th minute of the second half.

The score-line could have been different had the Ghawadi players utilised the scoring chances which came their way. Moreover, Balwinder Bittu, Mandeep Gill and Kulwinder Singh missed penalty strokes. For the Chahal Club, Pargat Singh fought the lone battle but his moves were well thwarted by the Ghawadi boys.

Earlier in the match for the hard line cup, the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club of Jarkhar defeated the Badesha Club of Sarihn 3-0. Manpreet Singh, Manminder Singh and Harpreet Singh struck for the Jarkhar lads.

Sukwinder Singh of the Badesha Club was declared the player-of-the-tournament.

Mr Malkit Singh Birmi, Minister for Jails and Urban Development, was the chief guest at the prize distribution function. Mr Depinder Singh Dimpy, Managing Director, Taj Resorts, Mr Daljeet Singh Grewal, ex-member, Zila Parishad, and Mr Daljit Singh, president, Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club, were among others present on this occasion.

Stadium at village opened

Punjab Minister for Jails and Housing and Urban Development Malkiat Singh Birmi today announced that a new basketball academy would be set up and a sports hostel constructed at this village.

Addressing a large gathering after inaugurating a portion of the sports stadium being constructed by Mata Sahib Kaur Memorial Sports Club at the village here today, he said those who had won medals had been honoured with monetary awards and had been given promotions by the government.

He said the Chief Minister was keen to promote sports and had chalked out a comprehensive sports policy, the first of its kind in the state, under which facilities available at international level would be provided to players for training.

Mr Birmi said the government would spend Rs 10 crore during the current financial year for the promotion of sports.

Reacting to the demands of the sports committee, he said Jarkhar would be developed as a modern village of the Dehlon block at a cost of Rs 75 lakh. He announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for the completion of the stadium and construction of two roads from the village to Ranian and Dangora.

Club chief Jagroop Singh said a modern sports hostel would be constructed in the stadium for the convenience of sportspersons who would be trained by world-class coaches.

The minister also inaugurated the building of a dispensary at Khanpur village and announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for the construction of drains and pavement of streets in the village.

Slow cycling competition

Avon Cycles Ltd will organise slow cycling competition at Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, here on May 12.
About 250 students, boys and girls, in two age groups are expected to take part. The Education Minister, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, will inaugurate the event.
