No Evening OPDs likely during vacation

With the PGI faculty proceeding on a two-month summer vacation from May 16, the Evening OPD services are likely to remain suspended during this period.

The Evening OPD facility that was started on December 7 was suspended temporarily within five days due to starting of winter vacations at the PGI. During the summer vacations, the faculty will remain on leave for one month each in two shifts and as such Evening OPD would remain suspended till July 15.

The Union Health Minister, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, had earlier said that seeing the poor response to the Evening OPD facility, the decision to continue with it could be reviewed.

The Evening OPD issue is expected to come up for discussion at the governing body meeting scheduled for May 12 in Delhi.

Yuvraj, Mongia making waves

Local star cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Mongia, who have made waves in the Indian cricket in recent times, are now the most sought-after players. Only a few days ago, it was announced that Yuvraj would be playing for the Yorkshire county club from May 18.

He will replace Mathhew Elliot who has decided to go back to Australia for family reasons. Yuvraj will be the only Indian player after Little Master SachinTendulkar who have been signed by this prestigious county club of England. Yuvraj is expected to play in the very first match that, their club is scheduled to play against Leicestershire.

Cricket experts are of the view that Yuvraj will quickly adapt to the playing conditions in the UK. He has the potential to do wonders, they maintain. Yuvraj, has not played any Test match yet, but has more than 70 one-day internationals to his credit.

Another local hero, Dinesh Mongia, who has also steadied his performance, is also in demand. He has been invited by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) to play a charity match at Johannesburg on May 15. The match will be played at the Centurion Cricket Ground. It will be a precursor to the Samsung IIFA Awards 2003. Indian cricketers and film stars will play against South African sports stars and celebrities. The Indian team includes Dinesh Mongia, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Mohammad Kaif, Zaheer Khan, Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja and Mohammed Azharuddin. Cine stars who are likely to play in the match are Salman Khan, Sunil Shetty, Anil Kapoor, Akshay and Rahul Khanna, Fardeen Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Bobby Deol, Shilpa Shetty. The funds so generated will be used for supporting technical staff of the Indian cinema.

Dinesh Mongia is going to tie nuptial knot with a Chennai-based girl on May 27.

Kinetic trophy

The Eagle Cricket Club outplayed the Sohana Cricket Club by 13 runs in a ‘C’ division match of the VIIth UT League Cricket Tournament for the Kinetic Trophy at PEC grounds here today.

In another matches, the Sonnet Cricket Club got the better of Axis XI by 137 runs to qualify for the pre-quarterfinal of the ‘C’ division league.

In other matches, Tashkak XI defeated the Rajput Sansi Cricket Club by four wickets and the Fateh Cricket Club routed the Divyanand Cultural Club by a huge margin of 142 runs.

In the matches played at the Sector 16 cricket stadium, Stadium XI ‘A’ team beat the District Panchkula Coaching Centre by 76 runs, while JJS XI defeated Professional XI by three wickets.

Billiards

Sandeep Chadha and Sandeep Duggal have entered the last four of the billiards match of the Fourth Saurabh Khattar Memorial Snooker and Billiards Championship played here at the Chandigarh club, Sector 2.

Sandeep Chadha outplayed Mahesh Chaudhary, 201-118, while Sandep Duggal defeated Sanjay Kaushal, 201-68.

In snooker events, Sandeep Duggal created upset by downing Sandeep Chadha, 3-0 (67-45, 65-12, 83-35). In other matches of the same event, Suresh Chaudhary defeated Rajan Ranjan Verma, 3-0 (65-38, 70-32,74-23), Sandeep Kochar beat Saurabh Nayyar, 3-0 (49-15,47-18,51-08), Anandit Joshi beat Gurminder Singh, 3-0 (73-31,76-06, 76-32), Ashish Bagrodia defeated Anand Chibber, 3-2 (49-33, 29-41, 60-67, 55-31, 56-32). In the lone quarter-final tie, Deepinder Singh got the better of Pranav Jain, 3-2 (67-20, 47-74, 20-67, 84-09, 51-24).

Karate championship

The karate players of KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, stole the limelight on the opening day of the Open Chandigarh State Karate Championship organised by All India Anti-Terrorist Front (Chandigarh region) played here today at the skating rink, Sector 10. Winners were: boys — Rijul, Panshul, Suhas, Ravi, Piyush, Aman, Mohd Rashi; girls — Tanya, Divjot, Reena, Menu, Lovely and Neetu. Earlier, Capt Harpal Singh (retd) inaugurated the two-day meet.

Basketball meet

IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, defeated St Anne’s School, Sector 32, by a margin of 37—05 on the second day of the Chandigarh Junior State Basketball Championship at New Public School, Sector 18, here today. In another tie, New Public School, Sector 18, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, 44-08; Government Model High School, Sector 26, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector18, 18-7.

In the boys’ section, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, defeated Guru Harkishan Public School, Sector 38, 34-19; St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, defeated Bhavan Vidyalya School, Sector 27, 39-18; DAV Public School, Sector 8, defeated Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, 47-33; DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, beat St Xavier’s-44, 52-34; NPS-18 beat St Stephen’s-45, 45-18.

98 vehicles challaned for using black films

Chandigarh, May 10
The Chandigarh traffic police today challaned 98 vehicles and impounded six others for using black films. With this, the total number of vehicles challaned so far during the past couple of weeks has gone up to 200.

According to sources in the traffic police, most of the vehicles challaned today were permitted to use black films on their vehicles, but the darkness of the films was more than the specified limit of 70 per cent.

Many vehicles of VVIPs were also challaned. However, the details of the VVIP vehicles could not be obtained.

Job for murdered XEN’s wife

The Chandigarh Administration has agreed to give a job on compassionate grounds to the widow of murdered XEN V.K. Chopra. Keeping in mind the qualification of Mrs Chopra the administration is expected to employ her as a clerk in the Engineering wing. The children of Ms Chopra are still studying.
