Chandigarh, May 4
If you have been denied the joy of motherhood due to infertility or repeated abortions, the answer might lie in a simple thyroid test rather than extensive investigations and gynaecological consultation.

In a large number of women who are unable to deliver a child, because of repeated abortions, the problem may lie in the malfunction of the thyroid gland. “I have seen that many women who were referred to our clinic and were prone to repeated abortions, were finally diagnosed to be suffering from hypothyroidism,” informed Dr Arvind Rajwanshi, Head of Cytology and Gynaecological Pathology Department at PGI.

Proper diagnosis and management of their thyroid problem can actually help them have a safe delivery. “ We routinely screen every woman coming to our clinic with infertility or other gynaecological problem for thyroid problem as the cause for their repeated abortions could be hypothyroidism,” explained Dr Umesh Jindal, a renowned gynaecologist running an infertility management centre.

She added that due to the lack of awareness many of these women do not even realise that they are suffering from hypothyroidism. One major reason being that the symptoms of hypothyroidism are not so evident.

Dr Rajwanshi, said women with hypothyroidism apart from being prone to frequent abortions, could develop cardiac problem and sluggishness. “ In women suffering from hypothyroidism, it is essential that there should be regular medical check ups during pregnancy so that any complications like mental retardation and other deformities in the foetus can be ruled out,” he stressed.

He said any swelling be it in thyroid or any other part should be thoroughly investigated as it could turn out to be malignant. He said swelling, hoarseness of voice and weight gain are some of the symptoms of thyroid problem. “The percentage of cancer in thyroid patients is a mere one per cent and the most commonest ones are cancer of papillary carcinoma and follicular carcinoma,” he said.

Dr J.D. Wig, Head of Surgery Department at PGI, informed that thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland in the neck, just below the Adam’s apple and is formed of two lobes. “ The thyroid gland produces hormones which affect the working of many areas of the body such as heart, brain, digestive system, skin, hair and muscles, can influence thinking and the speed at which the body works,” he explained.

With dental health care in our country still not being given due importance, it is not surprising that 90 per cent of adults suffer from gum problems and 70 per cent children have caries.

The Chandigarh Chapter of the Indian Dental Association today organised a certificate course on aesthetic dentistry for over 200 dental surgeons from the Northern region. Dr Sandesh Mayekar, MDS and founder President of the Indian Academy of Aesthetic and Cosmetic Dentistry delivered a lecture on “ Management of discoloured teeth “.

He stressed the need for oral hygiene and proper technique of brushing and rinsing .

Dr Dixit said the Dental Council of India, was pondering over making it mandatory for dental surgeons to get their registration done every year. At present dentists have to get the registration only once at the time of starting the practice.

Speakers highlighted the importance of using toothpastes with anti-bacterial substances which prevent deposition of yellow substance called gantrez on the teeth. The issue of excess fluoride content in water causing damage to teeth was also discussed. They stressed that excess fluoride could cause staining of teeth and using a toothpaste with controlled quantity of fluoride was the best solution for this problem.
