Stephanians back from Italy
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 30
The young Stephanians are back from Italy and they are bubbling with enthusiasm. Yes 18 youngsters (13-14 age-group) of the school’s Football Academy rubbed shoulders with the cream of football talent in the Tornei Internazionali Calcio (International Football Tournament) held in Italy from April 18 to 21.

They played against the top teams of Europe as also Russia. And to score two goals against the top teams even though in friendly matches, was an achievement. The robust Italians were all 15 and above. This was in contrast to the 13-14-year-olds of the Football Academy. They played their best but fell far short when it came to matching the physical strength of the Italians.

The Stephanians were showered with praise by the media. One paper wrote: The Indian youngsters were technically sound, but the brute strength of the rivals probably overawed them. The Chandigarh team scored two goals in two friendly matches. The scorers were Jasanpreet (left-half) and Sukhman Singh (right-half). But the exposure the team got in the tournament would go a long way in meeting the challenges ahead.

“It was good.” “It was exciting.” “It was a great experience.” These were the words of the youngsters when the Tribune team talked to them. Those responding with these exclamations were Nikhil Vyas, Sukhdeep, Pritpal and Sahibinder Singh.

As an excited football coach, Bhupinder Singh, talked about the tour, the school principal, Mr Harold Carver, remained a silent spectator.

The Chandigarh team lost to a Belgium team 0-5, an Italian club 0-6 and another Italian club 0-3. In the two friendly matches the Stephanians lost to ASC Fiume Venet (Italian Club) 1-3 and 1-2.
