Region lashed by snow, rain

Shimla, April 26
Higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh had moderate snowfall this afternoon, bringing a sharp fall in the temperature. A report from the border district of Lahaul and Spiti said Keylong, headquarters of the district, had recorded about 13 cm of snow and the snowfall was continuing. Shimla and its adjoining areas were swept by high-velocity gale, accompanied by a drizzle.

A report from Una said farmers of the district were disappointed today when moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by high-velocity winds, lashed most parts of the district in the afternoon. Wheat-harvesting season is in full swing here and heaps of wheat straw can be seen piled up in the fields. After the rains, the farmers will have a tough time, scattering and drying the wet bundles before threshing.

Reports of rain and winds were also received from Hamirpur, Kulu, Kangra and Solan districts.

CHANDIGARH: Hisar today sizzled as maximum temperature rose by four degrees to 43.2° C. On the other hand, showers late in the evening provided some relief to the residents of Chandigarh after the mercury shot by three degrees in the day at 39.0° C. The city and its surrounding towns of SAS Nagar and Panchkula were lashed by rain this evening, providing much-needed relief from the heat.

Ambala also reported showers after the mercury touched 40.1° C during the day there, according to the Meteorological Department here.

However, Srinagar shivered after receiving 21 mm of rain, causing the maximum temperature to drop by 10 degrees below normal to record 11.4° C, while the state’s winter capital Jammu also recorded a below normal high at 31.1° C. Ludhiana was the hottest zone in Punjab, recording a high of 40.9° C, three above normal, while Patiala was close recording a high of 40.4° C. Amritsar recorded a maximum of 35.7° C. Shimla recorded a five degrees above normal maximum temperature at 26.3° C while Solan had a high of 32.0° C.

HAMIRPUR: Various parts of the district were lashed by a squall on Saturday as a result of which life came to a standstill. Reports of light rains were received from a few parts. PTI, OC
