5 militants, lawyer killed in J&K
Srinagar, April 15
Eight persons, including five militants of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-Islami (HUJI), were killed in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 24 hours. Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch, M K Singh told UNI in Jammu that in an encounter at the Banwali area in upper reaches of Surankote sector troops launched a ‘seek and destroy’ operation to flush out some militants hiding there.

Jammu, April 15
Shakuntala Devi, (50) was killed and two others were seriously wounded as the Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling at Hanjana village in the Naushera sector of Rajouri district today.

JKLF expels 2 overseas leaders
Srinagar, April 15
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front has expelled two of its overseas leaders for joining the newly floated International Kashmir Alliance (IKA), which the Hurriyat Conference has described as “anti-movement”.

BJP to oppose autonomy, ‘healing touch’

Dr Nirmal Singh, president of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, said that the BJP will oppose the demand of the National Conference (NC) for autonomy to the state as also “healing touch” policy of the PDP-Congress coalition, both of which are dangerous for the country.

New policy on leasing state land
Jammu, April 15
Asserting that the coalition government would break the land mafia in Jammu and Kashmir, the state Revenue Minister, Hakim Mohammad Yasin, today said the government had decided to take back all “nazool” (non-agricultural) and state land whose 99 years’ lease had expired and lease it afresh through open bids.

5 militants, lawyer killed in J&K

Srinagar, April 15
Eight persons, including five militants of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-Islami (HUJI), were killed in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 24 hours.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch, M K Singh told UNI in Jammu that in an encounter at the Banwali area in upper reaches of Surankote sector troops launched a ‘seek and destroy’ operation to flush out some militants hiding there.

As the jawans reached the area, the militants opened fire and in the encounter, which lasted over nine hours, three militants were killed, Mr M.K. Singh said.

The slain militants belonged to the HUJI outfit, he said adding two AK rifles, 13 magazines, two RPG rounds, two wireless sets, 412 rounds and one IED were recovered from the site.

In another operation, troops shot dead two more HUJI militants in a search operation in the Mendhar sector also in Poonch district late last night, official sources added.

An official spokesman said a Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Magam Kokernag in Anantnag district last evening. One AK rifle, three magazines, 12 rounds and three grenades were recovered from the site.

He said militants entered the house of Advocate Mohammad Fazal at Topa Mendhar late last night and shot him dead.

The police recovered the body of Shabir Ahmed Thokar from Larnav Kokernag. The deceased, a resident of Rainpather, was abducted by militants on April 3.

Last night, a mine blast occurred at the Town hall building at Pampore on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. No one was wounded, the spokesman said.

In another incident, miscreants set ablaze a school building at Pattan in Baramulla last evening causing considerable damage. UNI

Woman killed in Pak firing

Jammu, April 15
Shakuntala Devi, (50) was killed and two others were seriously wounded as the Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling at Hanjana village in the Naushera sector of Rajouri district today.

The woman got killed as a mortar shell fired from across the border landed on her house which was completely destroyed.

Vikram, a 19-year-old student and a close relative of the deceased, has been shifted to the Medical College Hospital here for treatment. Another boy, Jagdish Raj of the nearby Dariala village, was also wounded.

Reports said more than 100 shells were lobbed at the village from across the border without any apparent provocation. People took refuge in the bunkers. The Indian troops retaliated and are learnt to have destroyed many Pak bunkers.

Two milch cattle were also killed due to the mortar which fell on the house of Shakuntala Devi.

Reports of Pakistani firing on Indian positions in the Balakote, Balnoi and Sagra sectors of Poonch have also been received.

Meanwhile, the security forces shot dead five ultras in the Poonch area.

Pakistani troops have been firing from small arms in this sector since Sunday, but suddenly they resorted to heavy mortar shelling at about 9 a.m. today and lobbed hundreds of shells within about 90 minutes. Thereafter, they again resorted to small arms firing.

The Chambalayal sector of Ramgarh in Jammu district is also witnessing heavy firing from across the border.

Pakistani soldiers resorted to unprovoked heavy shelling in the Kargil and Dras sectors of Ladakh on Saturday. They also resorted to shelling in the Uri sector of the Kashmir valley.

JKLF expels 2 overseas leaders

Srinagar, April 15
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front has expelled two of its overseas leaders for joining the newly floated International Kashmir Alliance (IKA), which the Hurriyat Conference has described as “anti-movement”.

A JKLF spokesman said here today that the Supreme Revolutionary Command Council of the outfit, at a meeting yesterday, decided to expel Abbas Butt, who was the president of the UK and Europe zone, and Shabir Choudhry, executive member of the Central Diplomatic Bureau, from the organisation.

Butt and Choudhry were expelled for joining the IKA floated by Mumtaz Kashmiri, Shoukat Kashmiri, Hashim Qureshi and Nazir Geelani, he said.

The JKLF had appointed Younis Choudhry, Ajmal Khan and Barrister Majid Tramboo to represent the UK and Europe zone in the Supreme Council of the outfit, the spokesman said.

The Hurriyat Conference said the track record of the founders of the IKA was proof enough of their “anti-movement activities.” PTI

BJP to oppose autonomy, ‘healing touch’

Dr Nirmal Singh, president of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, said that the BJP will oppose the demand of the National Conference (NC) for autonomy to the state as also “healing touch” policy of the PDP-Congress coalition, both of which are dangerous for the country.

In a statement issued here today, Dr Nirmal Singh said that the BJP would go to any extent to defeat the “nefarious designs” of the NC.

He said the suggestion of the NC that the Centre should hold a dialogue with Pakistan and separatists to find a solution to the Kashmir problem was fraught with dangerous ramifications. This would further vitiate the political atmosphere and bad to an explosive situation in the Jammu and Ladakh regions.

Dr Nirmal Singh said the NC had already caused much harm to the country by raking up the demand for autonomy.

New policy on leasing state land

Jammu, April 15
Asserting that the coalition government would break the land mafia in Jammu and Kashmir, the state Revenue Minister, Hakim Mohammad Yasin, today said the government had decided to take back all “nazool” (non-agricultural) and state land whose 99 years’ lease had expired and lease it afresh through open bids.

“The state government considers all such land as illegally occupied by the ex-lessees and a drive has been launched to get it vacated,” Mr Yasin said.

Mr Yasin ruled out any political interference or pressure in this drive and said it covered everyone, howsoever influential.

The Minister said the drive had begun in Srinagar with the sealing of more than a dozen premises whose lease period had expired many years ago.

He said a complete survey of such land had been ordered and it was estimated that at least 10,000 kanals of land whose lease had expired was in prime urban locations. PTI

J&K Govt’s incentives to film-makers

Jammu, April 15
To woo film-makers from Bollywood to shoot in the valley and boost tourism, the Jammu and Kashmir government has offered incentives, including of Rs 1 crore cover.

“We have offered many incentives to Bollywood producers including Rs one crore loan for assurance of wide security cover for shooting films in Kashmir,” Minister of State for Tourism Ghulam Ahmed Mir told PTI here today.

The state government is doing everything to woo Bollywood film producers to return to the valley for shooting, he said adding this would help revive state’s tourism industry.

The state government would also hold discussions with the Centre for providing air-fare concessions to film-makers, he said.

Besides the film producers would not be charged for using government places and gardens for shooting purposes, he said.

The steps have been taken after a team of top Bollywood film, makers, including Yash Chopra and Ramesh Sippy, visited Kashmir to study the ground-level situation last week.

“The film-makers have also desired to shoot films in the valley and some of them have booked tourist huts for two to three months”, Mir added. PTI

Hizbul’s faux pas on strike call

Apparently unaware of the schedule of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen today called a statewide bandh a day before he is to arrive here.

“We appeal to the people of the state to observe a complete hartal on April 17 when Mr Vajpayee will begin his visit to Jammu and Kashmir so that the international community understands that people of Kashmir abhor India,” newly appointed chief operational commander of the outfit Gazi Naseeruddin said in a statement sent to a local news agency here. Coalmine staff not paid for 3 months

Employees of the government-owned coalmines at Kalakot and Medhka in Rajouri district have not been paid their wages for three months.

Mr Rachpal Singh, National Conference MLA of Kalakot, today deplored the attitude of the management of these mines and said that the families of the employees were suffering. The coalition government was sleeping over the matter, he alleged.

Two persons drowned in Mansar Lake, 40 km from here, official sources said today.

The two Hans Raj and Des Raj, were taking a bath last evening, their feet slipped and they felt into the lake the sources said adding their bodies were yet to be found. PTI
