SA no match for commanding India Dhaka, April 13 Kaif
and left-handed Dinesh Mongia (55 not out) plundered runs at will in
the slog overs to steer their team to a mammoth 307 for four after
electing to bat on a good batting track. Captain Saurav Ganguly
provided the early sparks with a controlled 75. Required to score at
more than six runs per over, the South Africans never recovered from
the early jolts and were bundled out for 154 in 34.5 overs to give the
Indians their second consecutive victory in the series. The Indian
bowlers kept the pressure on the Proteas by bowling a nagging line and
length under floodlights to supplement the good work done by the
batsmen. Kaif and Mongia set the Bangabandhu stadium ablaze with an
amazing display of strokeplay during their rollocking unbeaten 110-run
fifth wicket partnership which left their opponents in a daze. Kaif
struck seven boundaries and three sixes in his knock which came off
103 balls while Mongia was more severe as he scored his 55 in just 38
balls. The South African run chase began on a disastrous note as
they lost skipper Graeme Smith in the very second over of the innings
with Ajit Agarkar providing the vital breakthrough. Smith, the
youngest ever South African captain, edged an incoming delivery on to
his stumps after scoring just one run. Jacques Rudoph, who joined
the action after his captain’s departure, did not survive long
falling prey to the wily Agarkar with Virender Sehwag taking a
brilliant catch at first slip. The two quick wickets left South
Africa gasping at 13 for two by the fifth over forcing Herschelle
Gibbs and Boeta Dippenaar to play cautiously against the Indian
speedsters. The two put on 42 runs for the third wicket before the
the South African batsmen made a beeline back to pavilion even though
Zaheer Khan had pulled out of the attack with a hamstring
injury. Harbhajan Singh, who was introduced into the attack in the
14th over, struck in his very first over by getting rid of dangerman
Gibbs (26) who offered a simple return catch. Dippenaar joined him
in the pavilion soon after with Ganguly taking the wicket as the
Proteas slumped to a precarious 57 for four by the 15th over. Neil
McKenzie (12) and Shaun Pollock (2) also joined the list of early
casualties, falling to the spinners. Debutant leg-spinner Amit
Mishra captured his first wicket in one-day internationals when he had
Mckenzie caught behind by Parthiv Patel while Harbhajan Singh
accounted for Shaun Pollock. Kaif and Mongia put on a brisk 110 runs
for the fifth wicket in just 11.4 overs to leave the Proteas in a
daze. Sehwag alongwith his opening partner Gautam Gambhir otherwise
had no difficulty in negotiating the South African pace bowlers as
Smith surprisingly decided not to give the new ball to former captain
Shuan Pollock. The opening pair put on 45 runs on the board before
Gambhir (18) perished with Ntini providing the breakthrough. The Delhi
opener, who seemed to be quite comfortable in the middle, tried to
pull an outside the leg stump delivery but only succeeded in edging
the ball to Mark Boucher behind the stumps. PTI SCOREBOARD

Gillespie ends Windies revival Georgetown, April 13 Australia, set 147 to win on a good batting wicket, had comfortably reached 47 without loss at lunch with Justin Langer not out on 32 and Matthew Hayden on 11. The only worry for the two left-handed openers appeared to be some dark clouds looming over the Bourda ground. The West Indies, a daunting 252 behind from the first innings, had reached 381 for five at the close on Saturday thanks to 113 from Daren Ganga, 110 from captain Brian Lara and 62 from debutant Devon Smith. But they were quickly in trouble as Gillespie had Vasbert Drakes lbw for 14 in the first over of the day. Mervyn Dillon, also lbw, followed for a duck in Gillespie’s next over and was replaced by Ridley Jacobs, who bravely limped out to bat despite a torn groin muscle. Both Jacobs and his partner Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who injured his knee scoring a century earlier in the match, used runners as they attempted to repeat their sixth-wicket partnership of 131. But in Gillespie’s fourth over Chanderpaul snicked a catch to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist for 31. Jacobs gave the crowd some brief cheer when he hit leg spinner Stuart MacGill for six but he was out in the same over when he got an inside edge and was caught at short leg by Darren Lehmann for 11. Tailender Jermaine Lawson followed when he was lbw to Gillespie without scoring. Left-hander Lara (110) and his Trinidadian colleague Ganga (113) led the resistance with a magnificent third wicket partnership of 185. Lara’s was his 19th Test century in his 91st match, while it was the first for the 24-year-old Ganga in his 18th Test. AFP SCOREBOARD West Indies (1st innings): 237 Australia (1st innings):

Elite ‘C’ clinch Duleep Trophy
Kochi, April 13 Resuming at their overnight score of 309 for nine, Plate ‘B’ batted for 13 more minutes this morning before being all out for 322. Vijay Bharadwaj, who waged a lone battle to remain overnight unbeaten on 94, duly completed his well-deserved century with a huge six off medium pacer Siddarth Trivedi in the very first over of the morning. However, Trivedi had the last laugh when he had the batsmen edging to wicketkeeper Pankaj Dharmani after adding five more runs. Bharadwaj’s knock of 105 had consisted of 10 hits to the fence and a six and had come from 251 deliveries. Plate ‘B’innings ended at 322, conceding a first innings lead of 104 runs. With the match becoming a mere formality after the first innings lead was decided, Elite ‘C’, in their second essay scored 167 for seven before declaring the innings in the sixth mandatory over and the match was called off. Kiran Pawar batted fluently for Elite ‘C’ in their second venture and scored 50, with seven boundaries while Jyoti Yadav contributed 23, Dharmani 23 and Hemang Badani 23. Leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani was the pick of Plate ‘B’ bowlers claiming four for 49 while left-arm spinner Sreekumar Nair took two for 43. NFL: Dempo end JCT’s winning streak Ludhiana, April 13 In what was perceived to be an opportunity for the mill men to boost their tally and climb further up the ladder, Dempo turned the tables on the former champions who only recently had humbled Kolkata’s East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and seemed on course to finishing in the top bracket. Such was the alarcrity of the Dempo attacks that JCT seemed to be fighting a losing battle from the onset. While the JCT forwards found themselves completely bottled up by the rival defence marshalled by stopper back Ratan Singh and skipper Stanley Colaco, Brazilian recruit Jose Luciano, Sameer Naik, Lazarus Fernandes, Mario Soares and Jose Colaco controlled the midfield while lending constant support to the attack spearheaded by Sri Lankan recruit Endril Channa, Clifford Miranda and dashing forward Bijen Singh. The password for Dempo, as coach Armando Colaco later emphasised, was ball possession. “ I had advised the boys to retain the ball come what may, and our game plan succeeded. Given the weather conditions, we were actually aiming for a draw but my team performed admirably to snatch full points,” said a beaming Armando after the gruelling tie, which left hundreds of JCT supporters thoroughly disappointed. JCT coach Sukhwinder Singh also admitted that the rivals played with greater enthusiasm and always stayed closer to the ball. Surprisingly, JCT named an off-colour and inexperienced Sukhwinder Singh in the starting line-up who proved totally ineffective in the midfield. It was only in the second half that he was substituted by Hardip Saini. IM Vijayan, who was back in action after missing the previous tie against Mohun Bagan, and star midfielder Jo Paul Anchery were also tightly marked. Dempo showed early promise with some brilliant runs by winger Clifford Miranda on the left flank. JCT took some time to settle down and in the 17th minute, Anchery managed to trap the ball inside the box before relaying it to striker Hardip Gill. However, Gill could only manage a feeble shot at Dempo custodian Francis Fernandes. Later Vijayan also tried to put Ram Pal in possession but a defender appeared in time to effect a clearance. A Vijayan- Gill move again proved abortive as Gill shot over. Thereafter, Dempo took over and in the 28th minute forced JCT into submission. A rebound off a counter-attack landed at the feet of an unmarked Ratan Singh outside the JCT box. With full confidence, the Dempo defender, who assisted East Bengal last season, unleashed a power-packed piledriver which sailed into the far corner of the net leaving goalie Mansuru Mohammed stunned (1-0). Bijen Singh could have added another after he had outpaced JCT stopper back Harpreet but in a hurry he shot wide. The equaliser for JCT came five minutes before the breather as striker Hardip Gill, after gaining possession inside the box, sent a gentle lob over Dempo goalie Francis Fernandes which sailed into the empty net (1-1). In the second half, Dempo again remained in control with Bijen Singh and EB Channa getting the better of the JCT defence. Channa had only the goalie to beat in the 55th minute but he only managed to shoot wide. JCT goalie Mansuru made a good save thereafter when off a flag kick, Jose Luciano nearly shot home but for Mansuru’s fine anticipation. A defensive lapse on the part of JCT ‘s Charanjit, who failed to hold on to the ball after goalie Mansuru Mohammed had thrown the ball to him resulted in Dempo’s second goal. Clifford Miranda, who was lurking nearby, snatched the ball before despatching a cross to striker Channa, who shot home from hand-shaking distance (2-1). In the 71st minute, international Bijen Singh capitalised on a lob, got the better of JCT stopper Harpreet and blasted home the third goal to make it 3-1. With time running out, JCT effected a couple of substitutions and brought in Mohammed Salisu in place of Ram Pal. However, all JCT moves came to nought in the face of a stubborn Dempo defence and the mill men ultimately surrendered to the Goans, who seemed hungry for victory throughout. Incidentally, it was JCT’s first defeat on home ground in the current league. JCT will now travel to Kolkata and Chennai for matches against Tollygunge and Indian Bank scheduled for April 24 and 28, respectively.

East Bengal beat
Indian Bank Kolkata, April 13 Okoro, topping the scorers’ list with 16 goals, netted twice in the 15th and 85th minute while Brazilian Douglas nicely converted a free kick in the 53rd minute of the one-sided encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium. With this win, which followed two reverses against JCT and Mahindra United, the red and yellow brigade consolidated further their stand at the top with 46 points from 20 matches.

Radcliffe shatters own mark
London, April 13 The 29-year-old English woman pulled clear of the field from the start and clocked 5:10 on her first mile, which put her on a pace for 2:15:28 as she followed two male Kenyan pacemakers hired by race officials. The race was run under perfect conditions with light winds and a starting temperature of 10C. Radcliffe’s time at the midway mark (21.1 kilometers) was 1:08:02, which put her 1:19 ahead of No. 2 Dita Constantina of Romania. Susan Chepkemei of Kenya was nine seconds behind the Romanian.
