Students in quandary over practical exam

Chandigarh, March 28
Students appearing in the annual practical examination of physics (final year of bachelor of science) at Goswami Ganesh Dutt Sanatan Dharam College, Sector 32, have been left in a quandary because they do not know the status of the practical examination conducted by external examiner.

This examination was conducted as a part of the annual examination for the current year recently. The reason is that the external examiner has complained to the university that the college principal did not counter-sign the marks list supplied to him by the examiners. The college principal on his part says that the examination had been unfair and more so the evaluation.

Reliable sources said that a similar complaint had been filed by a teacher of zoology from a local college pertaining to the same examination. The principal said he was not aware about the case.

Prof P.K. Aggarwal, a teacher at the local Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, was the external examiner. He has given a written complaint to the university saying that the college authorities did not cooperate with him during conduct of the examination. He said that the college laboratories were ill-equipped with the apparatus. The performance of the students was also below average.

Professor Aggarwal said when he sent the marks list to the principal , he did allow him entry into his room at the first place. In the second place the marks list was counter-signed by a staff member of the college so it was mandatory for the principal to give his signatures. He, however, had to return empty handed. “ I have no other alternative but to bring the event to eyes the notice of the university authorities,” he added.

Principal A.C.Vaid said that he was busy in another important meeting when the marks list was sent to him. “ I went through the list and was astonished at the marking. Except a marginal number, all other students were poorly marked. This did not reflect the actual capability of the students because they are regular in the classes throughout the year as is reflected through their attendance lists. Practical marks made a difference on the total merit and it was unfair in interest of the students,” Principal Vaid said.

Magic and mystery of Raz
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 28
Reputed Urdu and Punjabi poet Inder Singh Raz Santokhsari added yet another chapter to his literary prowess, with the formal release of his highly-rated work of poetry titled, "Talism-i-sar Nihan", at Panjab University this afternoon.

Literally meaning, the magic of mystery, this collection is a sensitive account of poet's feelings towards the various forces of life, nature and society. Penned in Urdu, the work speaks highly of the creative past of Raz Santokhsari, who has to his credit over 30 published works, ranging from ghazal collections in Urdu to full-fledged translations of works and scripts.

The releasing ceremony was organised under the auspices of Sheikh Baba Farid Chair of Medieval Indian Literature, which also invited three experts in the field of Urdu literature to make a critical assessment of the work being released. After the poetical collection was formally released by none other than Mr Amrik Singh Pooni, former president, Punjab Sahit Academy and a famous Punjabi poet, its critical analysis was done by the attending experts.

Papers were read by Prof Gurdial Singh Aarif, an eminent Urdu and Punjabi poet, who lauded the collection as "superbly creative and highly qualitative." Dr Sultan Anjum, Shiromani Sahitkar, also talked at length about the work which, he said, was rooted in sensitivity. The precision and perfection of language was also greatly appreciated. The third expert who assessed the work of Raz Santokhsari was Dr Rehana Parveen, Prof in the Department of Persian, Panjab University. Mr Amrik Singh Pooni, who released the collection this afternoon at Gandhi Bhawan, was himself impressed with the work of the poet, whose credits are immense.

Speaking about his work, Raz Santokhsari, former Editor of Pagdandi and Jaanisaar, two famous Urdu monthly magazines published from Amritsar, said the work was very close to his heart. "The ghazals have been written in Urdu and they are a pure extension of my own self, my feelings and my reactions to the elements of nature and life. A poetry ensemble as it is, it was not planned. The collection features ghazals that span ages, when talking in terms of time. All ghazals contained herein are reflections of my sensibilities."

The Urdu ghazals by Raz Santokhsari have been translated into Punjabi by his daughter. The earlier poetic ensembles by Raz Santokhsari are Inkhsaaf and Phullan de geet. the latter was dedicated to children.
