112 conferred degrees

“In this fast developing world we are facing cultural invasion from the West, which needs to be restricted by developing scientific temper and rational humanitarian approach towards life,” said Dr Inderjit Vashisht, Principal, Government College for Women, Ludhiana, in her convocation address at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, today.

She congratulated the president and the Principal of the college for successfully running the institution.

Dr Vashisht awarded degrees to 112 students, of which 14 won honours, five were arts graduates and 41 were commerce graduates. Besides, four roll of honours were given to Amritpal Singh and Gurmeet Singh in athletics , Mandeep Singh in hockey and Gurinderjit Kaur in dance. A total of 35 college colours, 30 merit certificates and special prizes were also given to the students for their outstanding performance in academics, sports and cultural activities. Also 147 students were honoured for their achievements in house exams and annual examination.

Dr Ishwar Singh, president of the college managing committee, welcomed the guests and Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Principal, read out the annual report.

Giddha dancer and Punjabi singer Sarabjit Mangat was also honoured on the occasion.

Among those who were present on the occasion were Prof Balwant Singh Pangali, secretary, college management committee, Mr Sardara Singh Oberoi, committee member Pritam Singh Jaggi, Mr D.S.Gosain, Principal, Shakti Model School, Prof Kuldip Singh, Government College for Women, Ludhiana , Mrs Raj Rani, Municipal Councillor, Doraha.

Court restrains gurdwara panel

Amloh, March 18
The Court of Mr S.S. Panesar yesterday passed an order restraining the new Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee of Gurdwara Singh Sabha from interfering in the management and control of gurdwara as well as from collecting the rent from tenants of the plaintiff forcibly, except in due course of law, until March 26, 2003.

The election to the new Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee here had been challenged by the previous committee through its president, Mr Harbhajan Singh, and secretary, Mr Ravinder Singh.

The case had been filed against 11 persons — Mohan Singh, Bant Singh, Sher Singh, Amrik Singh, Bikker Singh, Jasbir Singh alias Jassi, Mohan Singh (all residents of Amloh) Gurmeet Singh, Zora Singh, a resident of Beni Zer, Barsan Singh of Rai Pur village, and Hari Singh Shamashpur, who had allegedly formed a parallel committee by holding an illegal meeting in gurdwara.

The District Football Association, Ludhiana conducted trials at Guru Nanak Stadium here today to select the team for the Punjab State Senior Football Championship slated to be held at Bassi Patahana from March 19 to 23. The following 17 boys have been selected.

Sandeep Singh, Ashok Kumar, Jaskaran, Kanwalpreet Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Kuljeet Singh, Dapinderpal Singh, Manjit Singh, Harpreet Singh, Inderjit Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Chander Lal, Gurtej Singh, Kulvinder Singh, Parminder Singh, Amandeep Singh and Kamalpreet Singh.
