Stop ear scratching
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, March 17
Many people might enjoy scratching their ear, but it can be harmful to the extent of costing you the ability to hear. And many people have lost their hearing due to this reason. According to Dr Naresh Malhotra, a senior ENT consultant and former Head of Department of ENT, Christian Medical College, the urge to scratch the ear is caused by the wax that gets accumulated inside the ear.

Dr Malhotra advises that it is best to consult a specialist even if somebody feels mild itching in the ear. In most of the cases, it is caused by the crust that is formed because of wax. And continued scratching can damage the tympanic membrane, commonly known as the drum membrane, which provides the hearing ability.

The wax, according to Dr Malhotra, usually results from fungal infection or otomycosis. It is also caused by dandruff in the hair that accumulates in the ear. The best prevention is to ensure dandruff-free hair. The leading ENT specialist warns against consulting roadside quacks .
