Blood donors
honoured by Red Cross Society Faridabad, March 6 Sixty-year-old S. K. Verma, who has donated blood 40 times, was the first to be honoured. Mr J. N. Gehlaut, Secretary, Red Cross, Mr B. B. Kathuria and Mr R. K. Sharma were given medals for donating blood 35, 28 and 30 times, respectively. Others who were awarded included Mr Basant Bhatia (donated blood 25 times), Mr R. K. Chillana(23 times), Mr Paramjit Singh(21 times), Mr T. R. Kapoor(20), Mr Sunil Chuttani(18), Mr Harish Wadhwa(18), Mr Milap Arora(18), Mr Rakesh Chaudhary(17), Mr Manish Chaudhary(17), Mr Sanjay Arora(15), Mr Jaspal Singh(15), Mr Pravin(15), Mr R. G. Arora(13), Mr Sanjay Arora(13), Mr Surender Arora(12), Mr Arjun Dev(11), Mr Purshottam(11), Mr Ashok Arora(11), Mr Satender Kumar(10)and Mr Ashok Taneja (10). Among women, Ms Ranjana Sharma was honoured for donating blood 20 times. Ms Sanjula Chaudhary, Ms Radha Arora and Ms Shobita Chaudhary were honoured for donating blood 16, 16 and 10 times, respectively. Ms Gurmeet Kathuria, Ms Veena Nasa, Ms Hemlata Arora, Ms Asha Wadhwa, Ms Jyoti Arora, Ms Usha Kumar and Ms Promila Sardana were also awarded. |
Dhanraj Singh cracks century to beat World Bank New Delhi, March 6 World Bank won the toss and opted to field. Nehru Trust openers Mohan Sharma and Sunil Narula gave a blazing start to their knock when they put on 105 runs in just eight overs for the opening wicket. And then Dhanraj and Sundeep Malhotra put on 100 runs off nine overs for the seventh wicket to bolster the Nehru Trust total. World Bank were bundled out for 109 off 16 overs with veteran Sarkar Talwar and S P Sharma claiming three wickets each while Sandeep Joshi took two wickets. Scores:

Sudhir, Suman declared best athletes Rohtak, March 6 Other players of the university who excelled in the year 2002-2003 were also awarded today. International hockey player Sunita Dalal was the chief guest on the occasion and gave away the prizes to the winners. Sombir, Sanjay and Parminder were awarded Rs 1000 each for getting first position at the All India Inter University Kabaddi Championship (national style). Savita Nandal, Parmod Kumar and Manish Hooda were also honoured for their laudable performance in the All India Inter-University Championship held during the year. Suman, Neelam and Lalit from the Department of Physical Education received prizes for securing second position in the 9th Korfball Federation Cup, held in June 2002. The effort of Parmod Kumar, who had created new records at the University Athletic Meet 2003 in 100m and 400m race, was also recognised at the function organised under the aegis of the students and youth welfare office of the university. |

Surfeit
of sports action on Ten Sports New Delhi, March 6 In the FA Cup quarter-finals, league leaders Arsenal will take on the boys in blue, Chelsea, on March 8 from 10.30 pm (IST). Sheffiedl United will meet Leeds United on March 9 at 4.55 pm. Premier League leaders Arsenal are now chasing a double for the second successive year, looking for wins in both the league and the cup. Chelsea, by contrast, are relying on the FA Cup as their only chance to win a major trophy this year. The other match is a Yorkshire derby. Sheffield and Leeds are separated by just 40 miles and the two teams had a fierce rivalry. This year, Sheffield United are one of the favourites for promotion from the first division and will fancy their chances of beating their more glamorous local rivals. The tournament will head for an exciting climax with the semi-finals on April 13 and final on May 17. It’s goodbye to business activities in houses Sonepat, March 6 During today’s drive when a demolition task force of the HUDA led by Tehsildar, R. K. Ranga reached Sector 14 to remove encroachments and stop commercial activities as many as 30 owners of houses closed down their shops and assured that such commercial activities would not be started again. They were served with a notice, fixing March 3 as the last date of hearing, warning them to either end business activities in their residential accommodation within 24 hours or be ready to face punitive action against them. According to the Estate Officer and the SDM, Mr Sujan Singh, after the Supreme Court directive, as many as 269 encroachments and illegal commercial activities in the residential areas of Sectors 12, 14 and 15 and Housing Board complexes in the town were identified by the authorities and notices were served. He claimed, “Till date, we have demolished unauthorised encroachments at houses and factory buildings in four acres of land in Sector 12 besides closing commercial activities in 277 houses”. He disclosed that as many as 176 houses in the Housing Board residential complexes in these sectors were being used for commercial activities, adversely affecting the business of shopkeepers having shops in the commercial complexes of the sectors. These included 82 in Sector 15, 70 in Sector 14 and 24 in Sector 12. |
