Inquiry ordered into pool joint raids

In light of yesterday’s public outcry against the manner in which raids were conducted on various pool joints in Sectors 32, 34, and 46 the Inspector-General of Police, Chandigarh, Mr Rajesh Kumar, today ordered an inquiry into the complaints of the police high handedness.

Police action illegal, say residents
Chandigarh, March 6
In less than 24 hours after men-in-khaki barged into pool joints before rounding up young innocents playing inside, city residents, including lawyers and retired cops, today described the action as “absolutely illegal” and “unjustified”.

MC notifies 13 committees
Chandigarh, March 6
The Municipal Corporation here today paved the way for the functioning of the House committee notifying 13 of these. Eleven committees, which were formed last year, have ceased to function from January.

Challaning simplified
Chandigarh, March 6
To simplify the procedure of challaning motorists violating traffic rules, the Chandigarh Police has done away with the practice of jotting down the offence on the challan receipts. Now all the cops have to do is to mark the offence on all new challan receipts.

Work on slip roads begins
SAS Nagar, March 6
Work on providing slip roads at various chowks in the town has been started by the municipal council at a cost of about Rs 10 lakh. The project has been undertaken in order to avoid traffic congestion at certain points.

Token system for parking

The Municipal Corporation has started issuing tokens to visitors for parking vehicles at the paid parking lots. The issuance of tokens has been started in the wake of complaints that those who pay for the parking do not get the parking space.

CIA to probe cases against Pinjore gang
Panchkula, March 6
The police has decided to tighten its noose around a gang operating in Pinjore by setting up a special investigating team from amongst the CIA Staff. The gang is involved in about 60 cases of assault, criminal intimidation and rioting registered in Pinjore, Kalka and in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh.

Man booked for abducting girl
Chandigarh, March 6
The Chandigarh Police has registered a case of kidnapping and abduction against a resident of Bapu Dham Colony here this evening. According to the information available, Chotu, allegedly eloped with a 14-year-old girl. The police has registered a case under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC.

Panjab University has decided to conduct a special entrance test for admission to PhD courses. This has been done because only 7per cent students could qualify in the test conducted earlier.

195 persons donate blood

As many as 195 volunteers donated blood at a camp organised by the Panjab University Non-Teaching Employees Federation on the campus here today. The camp was organised in memory of Kalpana Chawla, who perished in the Columbia space shuttle tragedy recently.

Chandigarh, March 6
Spirited veteran paddlers of the city led by former national players Patanjali Kumar, Tilak Raj and Balbir Singh Virdi today romped home in the team championship for men (above 50 years) in the 10th National Veterans Table Tennis championship being played here at Sector 23 TT hall. Chandigarh defeated Andhra Pradesh in a nerve wrecking final with scores being 3-2.
