HC notice to Delhi govt on nurses’ selection
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Delhi Government and Medical Superintendent of Dr B S Ambedkar Hospital on a petition by para-medicos challenging the nurses’ selection process.

A division bench comprising Justices D K Jain and M B Lokur issued notices to Director Health Services, Delhi Staff Services Selection Board Secretary, city’s Health and Family Welfare Secretary and the Medical Superintendent of Dr B S Ambedkar Hospital.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by 30 nurses which claimed among other things that the selection results were declared without preparing a merit list.

Dr Surat Singh and Ms Mamta Rani, representing the nurses, argued that the Delhi Government had advertised posts for 866 staff nurses, of which only 37 were for the general category and 95.7 per cent seats reserved.

The state government’s action was illegal and arbitrary as the Supreme Court in the Mandal Commission case had held that the reservations could not be more than 50 per cent of the total seats, the petitioners claimed.

The nurses had earlier approached the Central Administrative Tribunal, which though deprecating the authorities for declaring the results without even preparing a merit list, yet refused to quash the impugned results.

The petition seeks to get the results declared void and the selection process done in a proper manner.
