‘Xive’ a boon for dentists, patients
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 1
“Xive”, a new implant system to be introduced in the country for the first time, will bring immediate and safe implantation”, said Dr Jan Keilhorn, Oral Surgeon, Reg. Board Specialist of Implantology, Oppenheim, Germany. Dr Keilhorn is on a four-day visit to the city to introduce the technique to the dental surgeons here.

In an interview with Ludhiana Tribune here today, Dr Keilhorn stressed that to make the technology successful, one had to follow a standard procedure protocol, a kind of check-list. He said ‘Xive’ was the most contemporary, revolutionary and safe implantology technique, in which patients would be able to get an implant-supported denture within one day or one week and in cases of a tooth fracture, the damaged tooth could be replaced within an hour.

Dr Vikram Prabhakar, Oralmaxillofacial Surgeon, said dental implantology was a necessary and very important part of modern treatments. Started more than two decades ago, implantology nowadays represented a safe, predictable and very successful therapy, he said.

Dr Kielhorn said: “Today the grinding down of unharmed teeth just to support bridges or dentures is considered to be an injury to the patient. Furthermore, elderly people with high bone athrophy, not being able to wear any kind of dentures, suffer both mentally and physically from this loss of life quality. This also results in an insufficient nutrition, speeding up the ageing process”.

Dr Kielhorn maintained that most failures and the following bad reputation of implants derive from a lack of anatomical knowledge, not following the standard procedure protocol (taking of shortcuts) or buying implant kits without undergoing a special training programme. He said: “My aim is to establish student education and a postgraduate certification programme to ensure that implantology in India is able to compete with international standards”.

Education camp on TB
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 1
A health education camp was held at Dr B.R.Ambedkar Nagar, a slum area adjoining Model Town, under the Revised National TB Control Programme today. Dr Anil Verma, District TB Officer, while addressing the participants said patients who had been suffering from cough for more than three weeks should undergo test for sputum so that the disease could be detected and the patient was given treatment at the earliest.

Dr Verma said there were 13 microscopy centers in the city where sputum examination was being done free of cost. To provide free anti-TB medicine to the patients, there were 299 directly observed treatment (DOT) centers in the city. “There is one DOT centre for every 5,000 people”, added Dr Verma.

Dr Damandeep said if a patient remained untreated, he could infect 10-15 people in a year. Dr Avtar and Dr Deol asked people to motivate suspected patients for TB to get themselves examined so that they could get free anti-TB medicines. The experts also laid emphasis on completing the treatment.
