MCM College eves excel in sports

Three international women players Irina Brar, Gurpreet Kaur and Sabeeha Dhillon, all from the local MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, have made their college proud along with a host of others in the past one year.

The college has won the Panjab University Women's General Efficiency Sports Shield award this year too. In the past 35 years, college has won this award 32 times.

In golf, Irina Brar, brought laurels by winning the Singapore Open, Sri Lankan Open and remained runners-up in Malaysian Open Golf championship in the year 2002 and also created history by winning all eight prestigious tournaments held last year.

Gurpreet Kaur, bagged a gold medal and silver medal in the 32nd National Games held at Hyderabad. She also secured fourth place in the 14th Asian Rowing Meet held in Korea. Besides she helped the college win one gold and five silver medals in the Inter-college rowing meet.

  Sabeeha Dhillon  Star shooter, Sabeeha Dhillon, took part in the 12th Olympic Shooting Hopes Meet held at Plzen in Czech Republic, then in another world level meet in Germany.

She won silver medal in the All--India Inter-Varsity Shooting Meet held in Gwalior. Sabeeha stole the limelight in the Northern India shooting meet at Chandigarh when she won five gold medals. She was also among the top ranked shooters of the country in the senior section and played in the First Masters meet held at Tughlakabad shooting range in New Delhi.

In badminton the college led by H. Sarda Devi, Isha Sharma won the PU Inter -College Badminton Meet which it won for the fifth year in succession. Both the girls also played in the Senior National Badminton Meet held in Guwahati.

The college cricket team also won PU inter-college title for the fourth year in succession and five girls, Rupali, Deepika, Suman, Anju and Ravia represented PU in the AlI-India inter-varsity cricket meet held in Indore.

MCM eves also bagged honours by winning inter-college hockey title for second year in succession with two of its players, Iqbal and Jyoti, helping PU win first place in the all-India inter-varsity championship.

In ball badminton also, PU clinched honours by winning inter-college meet. Then college table tennis team also won laurels by winning the title. The sixth title in the Panjab University sports meet, came in kabaddi when it won first place in the championship.

The sport disciplines where MCM eves remained runners-up were cross country races, judo, handball,shooting. College will honour the outstanding sportswomen along with other players during the Annual Sports Meet of the college to be held on February 26 and 27.

Swidha, Baljinder best athletes

Chandigarh, February 25
Swidha Taneja and Baljinder Singh, both of the Department of Physical Education, were adjudged the best athletes in women and men sections, respectively, in the 43rd annual athletic meet of Panjab University campus, held today. Earlier, the meet was inaugurated by Prof S.K. Sharma, Dean, University Instructions, Panjab University. Mr Mander Singh Sandhu, SP, Fatehgarh Sahib, gave away the prizes to the winners.

Baljinder Singh clinched top positions in 100, 200 and 400 metres races. In the 1,500 metre race Parveen Kumar won the first prize. The other winners were: broad jump-Kuldeep Panwar; high jump-Dinesh Dahiya; triple jump- Kuldeep Singh; shot put-Amanpreet; discus-throw-Rohit Dutta; hammer-throw-Amanpreet Singh.

In women section, Maninder Kaur secured the first prize in 50-metre event, while Swidha Taneja got the first position in 100, 200 and 400 metres races. Swidha won in the broad jump and Kanchan Thakur in high-jump event. Sudesh bagged the first posiiton in shot put, discus-throw and javelin-throw. Harjit Grewal and Vishwas won the three-legged race while Harjit Grewal secured first place in sack race.

Parnita Grewal was declared winner in the monthly medal round of the Chandigarh Golf Club, Sector 6, held last evening. Thirty golfers took part in the event. The gross score of Parnita was 79 while gross runner-up was Fatehbir Singh Dhaliwal with a score of 81. The nett winner in below-50-year category was Rahul Bakshi with a score of 70. Fatehbir was nett runner-up with a score of 72.

In the category of nett, for 50 to 65 years, the nett winner was S.C. Nagpal who scored 68 nett. The runner-up in this category was B.K. Haldar with a nett score of 71.

In the 65 to 70 years category, Brig Santokh Singh, VSM (retd) was the nett winner with a nett score of 33 while Lt-Col J.S. Sandhu (retd) was the nett runner-up with a score of 37. In the category of 70 plus, Mohinder Singh Guron was the nett winner with a score of 36. Brig Satjit Singh (retd) was the nett runner-up in this category with a score of 42.

Fine performance by HPSG

Chandigarh, February 25
Varinder Mehta played an instrumental role in the recent performance of the Haryana Power Sports Group, which finished second in team championship among 16 teams, in the 29th All India State Electricity Boards Badminton tournament, which concluded at Vadodara (Gujarat) on February 22.

It was Mehta’s 27th successive participation in the All-India electricity boards meet. Earlier, he had remained the Haryana and Chandigarh state champion.

In the matches played at Vadodara meet, which was organised by Gujarat State Vidyut Board, the HPSG team won its first tie against KPTCL 3-0 and then in the next round they outclassed APGENCO 3-0. Later, they beat Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board 3-1. In the final, HPSG lost to defending champions Punjab State Electricity Board.

The Haryana team comprised of Virinder Mehta, Varinder, Surinder, Gulshan and Mohan Lal.

Sports meet postponed

Chandigarh, February 25
The 14th Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Memorial Sports meet that was scheduled for March 1 and 2 will now be held on March 15 and 16. The events include kabaddi- Punjab style, volleyball (smashing), long jump and shot put and races for persons above 60 years.

The meet will be organised by Burail Sports club, Burail. According to Mr Chaman Lal, secretary of the club, the participants will be provided with free stay arrangements along with food at the venue.

Traffic police drive

Chandigarh, February 25
The Chandigarh Police is launching a drive to challan the motorists who over step the stop line at zebra crossings in the city. The traffic wing of the city police had found that motorists used to stop their vehicles on the zebra crossing. This was hurdle in the way of the pedestrians. A drive to check vehicles parked wrongly has also been started.
