Experts advise students to stay away from drugs
Tribune Reporters

Ludhiana, February 23
Dr Rajeev Gupta, consultant psychiatrist and de-addiction specialist at Manas in Tagore Nagar here, gave a talk on de-addiction to the students and teachers of Government Senior Secondary School at Nurpur Bet near Malikpur.

He told students not to accept any tablet, capsule, injection, or intoxicant substance from their friends. He also said students should give information regarding the drug habits of their friends to their teachers or family members. It is important to identify drug misuse at an early stage, since, once the habit of taking drugs is formed, it becomes difficult to come out of the self-created mess.

He gave a number of examples from his interactions as a psychologist with youngsters. He said most drug addicts ended up with serious physical and psychological problems. Rate of mortality among them was high.

Dr Gupta said drug addiction should be suspected in cases of undue aggression, loss of weight, loss of sleep, loss of interest in studies and work, frequent mood changes and general dullness. He said: “Drugs turn heroes into big zeroes.”

DORAHA: A seminar on drug de-addiction was organised by the BSB Welfare Society at Satnam Nagar here on Saturday.

The function was presided over by Dr Pooran Singh Jassi, a former Director Health Department of Punjab. Mr A.A. Sadiqui, ADGP Punjab, was the guest of honour.

In his speech he said: “The Punjab police shall open community centres in 10 districts of Punjab with the assistance of the British Council.” He also said senior citizens could play an integral part in various drug de-addiction drives.

He said, like at Doraha, community centres shall be opened in other districts, too, so that, the youth could be awakened. The expenses on opening the centres would be borne by the Punjab police.

On this occasion, a free eye-check up camp was also organised, where 147 patients were examined. At the camp, 50 needy persons were provided with help in cash and kind, 10 widows were given sewing machines, 25 children were given notebooks and slates and 97 volunteers were given mementoes and certificates by the HelpAge India.

The all-round welfare of the students of any educational institution covers all those aspects of the personality which fall within the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of educational activities. Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary Public School emphasises on provision of varied activities which help in developing a well-balanced personality of the students. All those formal and non-formal educational activities carried out in the school curricular helps in the harmonious development of the students and leads to total welfare of the students. The school started in 1987 under the guidance of Baba Isher Singh Nanaksar Education Trust and is affiliated to the Punjab board.

The purpose of all activities is the well-being of the youth. The school aims at the ‘total’ welfare of students. Besides curricular attainment, educational objectives are achieved indirectly through student participation in these activities, which are organised by the school but are not carried out as part of formal classroom work. The co-curricular activities are an integral part of the total school curriculum. These activities facilitate healthy all-round development of the youth scholars so that they become good citizens and are able to serve their nation to the best of the abilities. Where true aim of education is the harmonious development and total welfare of the child, these student welfare activities have direct effect on the academic performance of the students.

An important category of co-curricular activities which caters to the physical growth and developments of the students is thoroughly looked upon through provision of sports and games, NSS, scouting, physical drills, athletics etc. under the guidance of trained and well qualified staff. These activities provide useful exercise to the muscles of children and lead to physical and intellectual development. Extra energy is channelised for educative purposes in their physical education classes.

House system in the school leads to the training in leadership, democratic spirit and emotional development of students. students work with one another for achieving a common goal. These activities provide training in the art of living. The pupils develop social qualities like fellow feeling, co-operation, sincerity, tolerance etc. Children learn the relation of the individual and society. Students become conscious of their wider social environment. They share responsibilities with others. Complete social training is provided to them through activities like social service campaigns, scouting, first aid, community services etc. The child of today is a citizen of tomorrow. With the introduction of self-governments in the school, the practical training in practising democratic ideals is provided. Students learn to exercise their vote, how to bear responsibilities. They understand their rights and obligations, thus getting complete civil training. Students are made to participate in social welfare programmes to develop in organising ability, originality, initiative, resourcefulness, good judgement and self confidence. They have to do a lot of thinking and reasoning. They get the opportunities to develop their mental faculties. The activities are organised by the students themselves under the guidance of capable teachers.

Dramatics, pageants, folk dances, folk music, poetic symposia, variety shows and exhibitions, celebration of common social festivals or religious days help to understand our culture and heritage. Students are encouraged and motivated to take part in activities such as excursions, community, gardening, stamp collecting, reading books and magazines, making working and non-working models related to science activities.

‘Religion must refine and bring out the
best in a person’

Ms Veena SehgalMs Veena Sehgal got into teaching in the 1979 and that, too, as in charge of the Nursery and KG wing of an international school at Bangkok. Her husband had gone to Bangkok to study and she went along. She says that her stint there was the most beautiful experience of her career. Ever since that stint in Bangkok, she has served several educational institutes in different capacities. Ms Veena was appointed Principal of Baba Isher Singh School in 1995. Earlier she had taught in schools affiliated to the CBSE. The switchover to PSEB, to which this school is affiliated, necessitated some changes in the teaching methods. She brought in a lot of co-curricular activities and a change in teaching methods too. Spoken English was encouraged which was totally ignored earlier.

On religion

Religion helps one to raise a person much above material things and inculcates divine qualities of love, humility and patience. These very same qualities we try to imbibe in our students by teaching the subject of divinity. Through the regular studies of Sikh history, Sikh Gurus and their teachings that are relevant today also, the students become better persons. We teach about other religions too, as we do not believe in a lopsided approach but a balanced one as all religion teach good values. Learned people from all religions talk to students off and on. The teachers also act as role models so that the students naturally imbibe good things. Every first Saturday, recitation of Sukhmani Sahib is held.

On education

Practical part of education only makes learning more interesting for students. Hence the teachers in our school teach with the help of audio-visual aids till primary classes. Actually the Board should develop such aids for the students of the higher classes too. The curriculum should include practical aspects concerning life. Let the students be taken to banks, post offices, railway stations and taught things as to how to get a bank account opened, reserve a ticket and so on and so forth. Infrastructure is lacking in schools as there are no adequate number of buses to transport students to such places, and also due to the vast syllabus there is paucity of time, and hence the students cannot cope up with practical problems.

On discipline

Discipline should start as soon the child starts learning. These days parents give too much leeway to their children and only become strict with children when they reach the senior classes. By that time it is too late. Discipline should be brought about in a convincing and motivated manner so that the child knows that the remaining within discipline is good for him as well as others. Positive attitude of teachers also affects the students positively and students with happy thoughts are easy to discipline. The approach has to be situational and not rigid. In this school, the child is punished according to the situation and nature of fault. So the students know that the punishment they get is just and fair and do not repeat the same mistake generally. The discipline has to be maintained at home too, as if one channel is missing, discipline goes for a six.

Poems by students

Our school

Kirandeep Walia ClassVII

School is a place

where father pays

but child plays.

School is a good institution

where students have their tuition.

School is like a house,

where some children look

like micky mouse.

School has many links

where children eat and drink.

Our school is the best

where students take rest.

Baljinder, Jaspreet, Kanwaljeet & Jasmine of IX-B

Finding friends

I am here

but my friends are there.

There is snow

all are sitting in a row.

They are shouting ho-ho-ho

dogs are barking bow-bow-bow.

My friends are joined

but I am like a single coin

Balkaran Kaur IX-C

Drinking and drugs

Drinking and drugs go hand in hand.

After drinking man lies on land.

Taking drugs is bad for health

by taking drugs man loses his wealth.

People take drugs of different kinds

sometimes go crazy and even lose their mind.

For society, drugs are a black spot.

I want to make people alert

avoid drugs, remember it by your heart.
