2 porters killed in Pak shelling
Poonch, February 17
Two porters were killed in shelling by Pakistani troops from across the Line of Control on Sawjian sector in the border district of Jammu division today, defence sources said here.

Jammu-Srinagar highway reopens
Jammu, February 17
As many as 150 stranded vehicles were allowed to resume their onward journey today after the Jammu-Srinagar highway, closed since last evening, was cleared of snow. The 300-km road, the only surface link between the Valley and the rest of the country, was closed following fresh snowfall around the Jawahar tunnel yesterday.

ITBP officer among 2 killed in J&K

Srinagar, February 17
A Sub-Inspector of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was killed and a jawan was wounded in a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast near Sangam in South Kashmir today.

Elsewhere in the valley, one person was killed and two soldiers were wounded while the police rescued a civilian from ultras in the past 24 hours.

Official sources told UNI that militants triggered a powerful IED blast when a road opening party (ROP) of the ITBP was patrolling an area at Doonipora near Sangam on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

Sub-Inspector Sri Chand was killed on the spot and a jawan was wounded in the blast, he said.

An official spokesman said at least two security personnel were wounded when militants fired at them at Shumliyar village in the frontier district of Kupwara last night. The ultras escaped under the cover of darkness, he said. Meanwhile, the body of one Imran Ahmad was found at Kerawa Manloo Shopian village in Pulwama district last night, he added.

The security forces rescued Mohammad Rafiq Mir from militants at Damhal Khushipora in South Kashmir today. Mir had been abducted two days ago.

Although no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast the police suspected the hand of Hizbul Mujahideen. UNI

2 porters killed in Pak shelling

Poonch, February 17
Two porters were killed in shelling by Pakistani troops from across the Line of Control on Sawjian sector in the border district of Jammu division today, defence sources said here.

The Pakistani troops targeted Sawjian sector with mortar shells, sources said, adding that two porters were killed at Angan Pathri area in the sector around 11 a.m. today when one of the shells hit them.

The victims have been identified as Mohammad Shafi and Farooq Ahmed. The troops in the area later rescued three other porters and took them to a safer place, they said.

The Indian troops also retaliated and the exchange between two sides was continuing.

Meanwhile, intermittent exchange of small arms firing between the Indian and Pakistani troops was reported in Bhawani sector of Rajouri district and Akhnoor and Samba sectors in Jammu district during the past 24 hours. PTI

Jammu-Srinagar highway reopens

As many as 150 stranded vehicles were allowed to resume their onward journey today after the Jammu-Srinagar highway, closed since last evening, was cleared of snow.

The 300-km road, the only surface link between the Valley and the rest of the country, was closed following fresh snowfall around the Jawahar tunnel yesterday.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the highway between Banihal and Qazigund and made it traffic worthy, official sources said, adding that only the stranded vehicles were allowed to leave and the road was not opened for thorough traffic.

Fresh snowfall in higher reaches and rains in the plains since Saturday night have dipped mercury in the state with Jammu recording a minimum of 13.2ºC against 17.2ºC on the previous day, weather office said.

Second all-woman police station

The Jammu and Kashmir Police will have its second all-woman police station functional at Nehru Park here by the end of this month, this being part of its efforts to make the police more people-friendly in the state.

Announcing this on the occasion of distributing commendation medals to 32 personnel, the Director-General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Mr A.K. Suri, exhorted police personnel to work for peace and asked them to be people-friendly. He urged the police force to play its role in a positive manner which had become important after the recent Assembly elections. Mr Suri expressed the hope that the police would become instrumental in creating a good atmosphere ahead of the forthcoming shifting of the Dubar for summer season. This, he said, would help a great deal in attracting tourists to the valley during the coming months.

Earlier, the DGP distributed commendation medals to 32 officials for their meritorious services. Those awarded included six IPS officers and a retired Superintendent of Police. The IPS officers awarded were Mr Syed Javed Mujtaba Gilani, SSP, Srinagar, Mr G.A. Dar, SSP (Security), Kashmir, Sheikh Ghulam Mohammad, CO, IRP-IIIrd Bn, Mr S.D. Singh Jamwal, SP, Kupwara, Mr Satish Khandare, SP, Budgam, and Mr Viplav Kumar, SP, Pulwama. The retired SP, Mr A.Q. Mir, was also awarded a commendation medal.

Others who got the awards included DSPs Bashir Ahmad, A.R. Lone, Shahzada Parveen, Bashir Ahmad Khan, R.K. Dhar, Bashir Ahmad Dar, Inspectors Mohammad Nasir, Danish Gupta, Farooq Ahmad Syed Nasir and Mushtaq Ahmad. Three SIs and two ASIs, four Head Constables and five constables were also awarded.
