Stop aiding terror, Advani asks nations New Delhi, February 11 “Differences between India and Pakistan should be resolved through a dialogue and not by resorting to any kind of war, covert or overt. There should be a dialogue to bridge the gap, but peace should not be held hostage to violence”, Mr Advani said. In his valedictory address to the International Youth Conference on Terrorism here, Mr Advani said India was not averse to resumption of a dialogue provided Pakistan put a permanent end to cross-border terrorism”, the Deputy Prime Minister said adding that “proxy war and cross-border terrorism must stop”. Stating that India was determined to end the menace, Mr Advani said though India would continue to fight the menace of terrorism on its own strength yet “We do hope post-September 11 all nations of the world will not in any manner support the countries which directly or indirectly support terrorism”. In a veiled reference to Pakistan, the Deputy Prime Minister appealed to the world community to stop support to countries which directly or indirectly aid and abet terrorism. “A state like Pakistan must never be allowed to cause disruption”, he said. Hitting out at the ‘Jehadi’ terrorism and the ideology of ‘pan Islamism’, Mr Advani said these concepts were against the principles of democracy, secularism, pluralism, multi-culturalism and individual freedom. “This ideology of pan-Islamism does not even believe in the concept of national sovereignty and national boundaries...Hence it claims legitimacy in sending jehadi fighters from other countries into Kashmir”, he observed. Asserting that India would win a decisive victory over forces of terrorism, Mr Advani said “we do not expect other countries to fight our battle. Pointing out that Pakistan was aiding and abetting terrorism in J and K in the name of “freedom struggle,” he said terrorist organisations “cannot sustain their campaign for too long without active support of states that believe, to whatever degree, in the ideology of jehad to settle political disputes.” |
16 held in raids on bookies Sriganganagar, February 11 Police sources said that when raids were made the accused were busy booking bets on cricket matches between Sri Lanka and New Zealand and Zimbabwe and Namibia of ICC World Cup-2003. Raids were made after securing warrants to search the premises of satta operators. During raids 16 Satta operators identified as Ashwani Kumar, Manoj, Rajesh, Raveen Sharma, Harish, Ashok Kumar, Chagan Lal, Raj Kumar, Mukesh, Sudesh Kumar, Parmod, Vinod, Prem Kumar, Devinder Kumar and Subash Gandhi were held. Sources added that the police was examining the account books, alleged to have accounts of stake bidders. Mobile phone records were also being scanned for information to reach other accomplices of the accused. Sources said that the police formed a team headed by a DSP to check betting during the cricket world cup. The police had been using services of decoy to nab more satta operators. Information revealed that several satta operators in Punjab had changed their area of operation. Some of the big bookies having customers in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi had been running “business” by flaunting luxury cars to avoid detection by the police. |
PM, Advani to meet Mayawati on Feb 15 New Delhi, February 11 The meeting will be preceded by parleys between Ms Mayawati, Mr Advani, Mr Naidu and BJP leaders from the state to work out modalities to ensure that there is no public criticism of the Chief Minister. This follows a meeting between Ms Mayawati and Mr Advani on Sunday following strident attacks by state BJP leaders Rajnath Singh and BJP state President Vinay Katiyar on the arrest of Independent MLA Raja Bhaiyya and Mr Katiyar’s bid to invoke B.R. Ambedkar’s name in his Hindutva campaign. “Mayawati will have talks with Mr Advani and myself on February 15 in which we will discuss the entire gamut of BJP-BSP relations in the state and also steps to ensure smooth functioning of the coalition,” Mr Naidu told newspersons here today. Mr Naidu said a day before the meeting, he, along with Mr Advani, would have a meeting with party leaders from the state to discuss the prevailing political situation and the recent dissidence in the party in the state. At the meeting with state leaders, the BJP central leaders will take up all issues which are causing friction between the coalition patners in the state, Mr Naidu said. Earlier, the party had asked its state leaders, including general secretary Rajnath Singh, to refrain from publicly criticising the state government’s decision to arrest Raja Bhaiyya under POTA. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had asked Mr Advani to ensure there was no public criticism. “This business of their (BJP leaders) going to the press with every little thing must stop,” she said. “I suggested to the Deputy Prime Minister that he should call me and his party leaders from the state together so that any problem they have we can sort out face to face..... He agreed to my suggestion”, Ms Mayawati said. A section in the BJP feels strongly that the present line of the high command in Uttar Pradesh could eventually lead to erosion of the party’s support base in the state and “in the coming years, we could be in the same position as the Congress is at present.” |

PoK PM may be sacked New Delhi, February 11 Pakistan-watchers here believe that differences between Mr Sikandar Hayat Khan and the PoK President, Maj-Gen Mohammad Anwar Khan (retd), have deepened after the former opposed the Pakistan Government’s proposal to raise the height of the Mangla Dam by 40 ft. Adding insult to injury, as it were, Mr Sikandar Hayat Khan has alleged that the PoK President was pressuring him to accept the draft proposal sent by the Federal government which sought to abolish the office of the Prime Minister of the PoK, the Supreme Court of the PoK, the office of the Chief Election Commissioner of the PoK and reduce the number of seats in the PoK Legislative Assembly from 48 to 26. According to information routed here through diplomatic channels, General Anwar Khan, in his effort to teach Mr Sikandar Hayat Khan a lesson, has ordered the re-introducing of army monitoring teams to oversee the working of the PoK government. This move of President Khan would further clip the wings of the Prime Minister by ensuring the army’s direct interference in the day-to-day working of the PoK government. The situation has come to a head, with Maj-Gen Wasim Ashraf, GOC Murree, who is looking after the PoK affairs, directing Prime Minister Khan to immediately give him a performance report. According to these reports, Mr Sikandar Hayat Khan has lost the confidence of the army, which does not want that he should raise the issue of increasing the height of the Mangla Dam. PoK leaders have been alleging that by raising the height of the dam the entire Mirpur town would submerge. The Government of Pakistan did not compensate the Mirpuris when the Mangla Dam was constructed in 1960 which had uprooted over 80,000 persons. Mr Sikandar Hayat Khan has demanded that if the Pakistan Government goes ahead with the raising of the height of the Mangla Dam, it would have to compensate not only those who would be displaced, but those affected earlier as well. He has also demanded share in the revenues generated from electricity being produced from the Mangla Dam and fixation of power tariff for power being supplied by WAPDA to the PoK. |
