US stroke expert visits DMCH

Ludhiana, February 6
The chances of recovery of stroke patients have become better as a new medicine have come in the market. It should be administered under medical supervision within the first three hours of the stroke. For this, it is important to spread awareness about the stroke and whenever it occurs, medical help should be sought immediately. A stroke is caused by the clotting of blood in vessels of the brain and oxygen deprivation caused by it. After heart attack and cancer, it is the third leading cause of death in the USA.

This was stated by Dr Harmeet Sachdev, Director, Stroke Centre of Good Samaritan Hospital, San Jones, California, while delivering a lecture organised by Dayanand Medical College and Hospital(DMCH)in his honour during his visit to the hospital yesterday. He was invited by the Medicine Department of the DMCH to share his views on the latest advancement in the treatment of stroke.

He visited the Stroke ICU, Neurology Ward and other hospital areas and appreciated patient care and state-of-the-art facilities at the DMCH.

Hockey, kabaddi meets from today

Ludhiana, February 6
The 17th Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup hockey and Bibi Surjit Kaur Memorial Silver Cup kabaddi tournaments will be held at Jarkhar village, about 20 km from here, from February 7 to 9.

According to Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu, Chairman of the Sports Club, Jarkhar, besides hockey (boys and girls) and kabaddi, volleyball (shooting and smashing) and dog races will be there.

On the concluding day, February 9, an exhibition kabaddi match between teams of the Punjab State Electricity Board and Canada XI will be held. On the occasion, hockey star Dhanraj Pilley will be honoured with Olympian Surjit Singh Award and Moscow Olympic goalkeeper Ashok Dewan will be given Prithipal Singh Memorial Award while kabaddi star Bhinder of Nawan Pind will be felicitated with Alankar Tony Award and Kulwant Singh Boparai, a sports organiser, will be given Amarjit Grewal Award for his contribution to sports in the state.

Mr Malkit Singh Birmi, an MLA, will inaugurate the meet while Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab, and president of the Punjab Basketball Association, will be the chief guest on the concluding day.

Daljeet is Mr India

Daljeet Singh of the Punjab Police made the city and his department proud by clinching “Mr India- 2003” title in the competition held on January 26 at Belgaum (Karnataka) . According to Dr Deepak Prashar, joint secretary of the Punjab Amateur Bodybuilding Association, Daljeet Singh won the coveted title in the 65-kg category. Mr Mahal Singh Bhullar, Director-General of Police, Punjab, and Dr Randhir Hastir have congratulated Daljeet Singh on winning the title.

Player remembered

Representatives of various sports associations and sports organisers paid tributes to Dharamvir Khullar, a former Punjab Ranji player, at his bhog ceremony held at the Mahavir Bhavan, Cemetery Road, Civil Lines, here on Tuesday.

Khullar (70) died on January 23 after a prolonged illness. He had represented the state in various matches during the 1960s.

Athletic meet

KHANNA: The annual athletic meet of A.S. College here was concluded at Madan Gopal Chopra Memorial Stadium here yesterday. Prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Yoginder Sharma, president of the college committee.

In the 100m race of men, Manmohan Singh bagged the first prize, Parmvir Gill was second and Gurinder Singh third. In 200m, race Manmohan Singh, Parmvir Singh and Harpreet Singh got the first, second and third prizes respectively. Title of 1500m race was won by Manmohan Singh, while Harjinder Singh was second and Bhawan Deep Singh third.

In long jump, Nirbhai Singh stood first, Dharminder Singh second and Harjinder Singh third.

The kabaddi championship was won by the MA (political science) team by defeating BA (part II). The cricket championship was won by BA (part II) who defeated MA (political science). The volleyball championship was bagged by the BA (I) team which defeated BSc.

In women’s 100m race, Simran Jit stood first while Harpreet got the second position and Harminder got third. In the three-legged race of women, Manjinder and Harpreet won the first prize; Balwinder and Amandeep got second and Balpreet and Anupma got the third prize. The title of the badminton championship of women was bagged by Namrita Bansal while Manisha Verma was the runner-up.

Manmohan Singh was announced the best sportsman of the meet. Prof V.K. Chum, a known basketball player, was also honoured on the occasion. SDM Jaspal Mittal was the chief guest on the occasion.

Sports meet

Mandi Gobindgarh: The North zone sports and cultural meet of ayurvedic colleges will be organised from February 10 to 14 by the local Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital. The meet will be inaugurated by Mr Vikas Partap, Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mr S.N. Singh, Principal of the college, told mediapersons here on Thursday.

The meet will be organised in memory of freedom fighter Lal Singh under the aegis of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. Basketball and cricket competitions will be held on the ground of Government Senior Secondary School, Amloh, and badminton in a local indoor stadium. Athletics and other events will be held on the college premises.

The cultural competitions, in solo dance, choreography, gidha, bhangra, group dance, group song, folk song, lyric (gazal ) and play will begin from February 12 and prize distribution will be held on February 14.

LODHI CUP KABADDI TOURNAMENT
Germany lifts trophy

Ludhiana, February 6
Germany prevailed over England to lift the trophy in the sixth Lodhi Cup Kabaddi Tournament held at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. In a thrilling final, Germany boys proved their mettle to bag the title 34-28. The winners were leading with a wafer-thin one point margin at the breather.

For England, raiders-Bhinder Nawan Pind, Jinder Dhad and Malkit Angrez while stoppers Bazi Jhand, Fauji Karh, Jagtar of Dhanola and Lalli Bhattari gave account of themselves and for Germany, raiders who excelled were Kuldeep Badniwala, Onkar Kaunke and Ajmer Jalal while stoppers who performed well were- Gilzar, Gukh Sherpur Wala and Gaggi of Lopon.

A very large number of spectators had converged at the venue to witness the meet which was scheduled to be organised here on January 30 but had be postponed because of rain. Earlier, Germany players got the better of Norway 37-27 and England drubbed hosts India 39-30.

The match between India and England was a well-contested affair with both the teams fighting it tooth and nail for each point and the spectators enjoying every bit of it. Seera Shamipura and an NRI from Toronto Sports Club, Canada, rewarded players from both the sides with Rs 5,000 at each point scored.

Mr Tej Parkash Singh, Transport Minister, Punjab gave away prizes to the winners. He handed over the keys of Bajaj Kawasaki motorbikes to Bhinder Nawan Pind (best raider) and Gulzar (best stopper).

Belt-grading test held

Ludhiana, February 6
The Centre for Advanced Martial Arts Training (CAMAT) organised colour belt grading promotion test at Sacred Heart Convent School, Chandigarh road, here today. More than 600 karatekas from IVth to VIIth standard demonstrated their skills.

Pardeep Sharma, chief instructor and examiner, India (CAMAT), supervised the test. Rishu form Himachal Pradesh, Parvinder from Jammu and Kashmir, Naveen from Amritsar, and Harkamal from Pathankot along with Om Parkash Verma, chief instructor, North India, were present during the test.

The following students got belts today-Prince Katyal and Nitesh Goyal (green blue belts) and Kajol of Sacred Heart Convent School (green belt), Raikot; Pushpuneet (yellow belt), Abhinav (green belt) and Munish Gill of Sacred Heart Convent School (yellow green belt), Jagraon; Vinod (blue red belt), Avinash Kaur (blue belt) and Monika of Sacred Heart Convent School (green belt), Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana.
