Pak UAV shot

Mufti to campaign for Cong in HP Jammu, February 6 An aide of the Mufti said here today that so far there was no programme of the Chief Minister to visit Himachal. On the other hand, the Congress high command has ordered all party legislators and ministers here to visit Himachal when duties were assigned to them. It is learnt that even the Congress was not very keen on involving the PDP in the campaign as it might prove counter-productive. The BJP is accusing the Mufti and his PDP of being soft towards the terrorists and releasing some of them. However, some PDP activists might be asked to tour Himachal areas where Muslims reside. There is no constituency in Himachal where the Muslims could play a decisive role. Their number is good around Paonta Sahib, Chamba and Bilaspur. Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, is in demand in Himachal because of his being a Brahmin. It is learnt that many Congress candidates have requested him for campaigning in their constituencies. There was hardly any Brahmin leader of stature in the Congress party in Himachal after the death of Pandit Sant Ram. HVC leader, Sukh Ram, was expelled from the party following seizure of money from the party following seizure of money from his residence at Mandi by the CBI. His reinduction in the party failed because of his ‘tainted’ image following his conviction by a court. Congress candidates were keen on the visit of Mr Mangat Ram Sharma because he had toured Himachal extensively during recent organisational elections when he was the party observer. Moreover, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma is familiar with the Himachal areas as he had campaigned there previously for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Many other ministers and legislators might be deputed for the campaign particularly in the Kangra and Chamba districts adjoining the Jammu region and are alike culturally and linguistically. Particularly the Rajputs have traditional links with the Kangra area and the legislators of the community are being asked to camp there. It is not yet certain whether the Panthers Party, which is also sharing power in Jammu & Kashmir send its activists to the adjoining state for campaigning for its alliance partner. |

Mr Bhat was hanged to death and buried within the Tihar jail complex on February 11, 1984. However, when the processionists, holding banners in support of their demand, reached the Budshah chowk the police swung into action and resorted to lathicharge. But when it had no affect, the police burst teargas shells and later detained Malik, along with seven others, including JKLF vice-chairman Javid Ahmad Mir. Business and transport activities came to a halt in the area after the incident. The JKLF has decided not to give any hartal call on February 11, the 19th death anniversary of Maqbool Bhat.
