SGGS College wins running trophy

Chandigarh, February 6
Pallavi and Harleen from SGGS College, Sector 26, won the running trophy in a declamation contest organised on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebrations at Government College for Men, Sector 11, here today.

Jyotika from GGDSD College stood first. While the second prize was shared between Pallavi from SGGS College and Vivek from the host college.

Manpreet from MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, won the poem recitation contest. Naveen Sangwan from the host college and Sarabjit Kochhar (MCM) were second and third, respectively.

Principal Balvinder Singh gave away the prizes.

School-leaving certificate for Rs 150!

Chandigarh, February 6
Fresh passouts from the local Sacred Heart School have complained that the school was ‘unreasonably’ charging them Rs 150 for school-leaving certificate.
A student said on condition of anonymity that there was no justification in the school charging the special fee. Those who had decided to continue in the school were not being charged the same amount which was unfair, she said.

The school authorities said the money was collected as a small contribution for the improvement of the school infrastructure and other academic facilities and the amount was being sought “voluntarily”.

Charges framed in Pala murder case

Chandigarh, February 6
A local court today framed charges against Kartar Singh and others in connection with the murder of a former sarpanch of Khuda Ali Sher, Pala Singh. After framing the charges, the UT Additional and Sessions Judge, Mr J.S. Kler, adjourned the hearing of the case till March 3.

Meanwhile, two accused, Satpal Singh and Kalyan Singh, have filed an interim bail plea in the case. They have requested that they have to attend the marriage of their niece, therefore, they may be granted interim bail for a week. The court has issued a notice to the state to file a reply by February 15.

As per the prosecution, accused Kartar Singh, along with others, had allegedly killed Pala Singh for avenging the death of Kaka Singh, who was killed on February 2 last at Nayagoan during elections in Punjab. On July 2, at least 12 assailants had opened indiscriminate fire and chased Pala Singh for about 15 m before shooting him thrice at Khuda Alisher village. Later, Pala Singh succumbed to his injuries on way to the PGI.

Meanwhile, the counsel for the accused pleaded in the court that the jail authorities had violated their clients’ human rights by not allowing them to eat anything since morning in a makeshift jail in the district courts.

Judicial remand for ex-minister

Kharar, February 6
Ms Preeti Sahni, Judicial Magistrate, today remanded Mr Sohan Singh Thandal, former Punjab Minister who was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in connection with a corruption case registered against him at SAS Nagar, in judicial custody till February 13. The accused would now be produced before the Special Judge, Ropar. His police remand had been extended till today.

The public prosecutor pleaded for a five-day police remand of the accused. It was also contended that a sum of around Rs 20 lakh had been deposited in the accused’s bank account during 2001 and 2002.

‘Khushi’, ‘Satta’ coming

Provogue brand ambassador Fardeen Khan has been roped in to play the lead role opposite Kareena Kapoor for the first time in Narsimha Enterprises ‘Khushi’, a beautiful love story scheduled to be released today at Piccadily, Chandigarh; K.C., Panchkula. This comes from the house of Surinder Kapoor and producer Boney Kapoor. The film also stars Anup Soni, Amrish Puri, Neeraj Vora, Navin Nischal, Sharat Saxena, Beena, Johny lever besides other actors.

Both, Fardeen Khan and Kareena Kapoor hope that the Hindi remake of a successful South potboiler will certainly bring ‘khushi’ to them and the film-maker. Directed by S.J. Suryah, ‘Khushi’ has very energetic and romantic music by Anu Malik with lyrics penned by Sameer.

‘Khushi’ is a film as unpredictable as love! The story is about today’s fiery youth. A boy and a girl love one another but because of their self made ego, they drift away from each other. An intriguing look into the matters of the heart. The story of a foreign returned young lad and a small town girl with a million dollar smile.

Equally determined to forge his own identity is Madhur Bhandarkar, the maker of ‘Chandni Bar’. He is all set to prove his worth with another small budget film ‘Satta’. The film stars Raveena Tandon, Atul Kulkarni, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Govind Namdeo, Shriballabh Vyas, Abhay Bhargava and Suchitra Pillai. This one opens at Neelam, Chandigarh. It is Madhur Bhandarkar’s second look at Mumbai’s underbelly after ‘Chandni Bar’. This one is a political thriller made by the banner Metalight Productions in which Raveena Tandon plays a challenging role.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Satta’ centres around current political situation, corruption and violence. It is about the turn of events which transforms an ordinary housewife into a powerful politician.

Action director Tinu Verma of ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ turns producer with his banner Kapishek Films new movie ‘Baaz — A Bird in Danger’. This one features Karisma Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Preeti Jhangiani and ‘Raaz’ fame Dino Morea in lead roles. Widely shot in outdoor locations of Khandala this film is touted as a suspense thriller in which Karisma Kapoor plays a challenging role after ‘Shakti’. Shyam K Goel is the story writer and Sanjay Masoom has penned the dialogue.

Music director Ismail Darbar of ‘Devdas’ and lyrics writer Mehboob has come up with an average score. This film opens today at Bassi, SAS Nagar. — D.P.
