A boon to higher education for girls
Our Correspondent

Jhajjar, January 31
The founding of the Maharaja Aggarsen College for Women in 1984 by the Aggarsen Society was a boon for girls aspiring of pursuing higher studies. In absence of a separate college for women, most of the students had to quit studies after completing their schooling, as parents were reluctant to send their girls to other towns for college studies.

In a short span of 18 years, Maharaja Aggarsen College for Women has evolved into a “college with a difference”.

The establishment of a girl college in the district was particularly important, as crime against women in this region is one of the highest in the state. Over the years, the college has made significant strides to enlarge the opportunities available to the students of the college. Nearly 750 girls enroll in the college every year. The college is successfully running a NSS unit, with about 100 girl volunteers. However, the students and the authorities of the college have their own peculiar problems. The sports activities in the college are negligible in absence of a playground of their own. “We want to take part in different sports competitions but cannot do so as we neither have a ground nor a DPE,” complained a group of students.

They said that the college authorities have asked them to go to Jahanara Stadium for practice, which is not always possible. “Even for the parade and other outdoor events, we have to go to the stadium, which is far away from the campus, “ said the students.

However, the authorities refused to look upon it as a problem. The principal of the college, Dr Bala Dhankar, said the non-availability of a sports ground is not affecting the sports activities in the college. On the academic front, she said “the vacant posts of teachers would be filled up following the vacation of ban by the Haryana Government on new appointments". Five posts of teachers, one post of DPE and a librarian are lying vacant for some time. Another urgent requirement of the college is the establishment of a science faculty. Presently, the college provides courses only in Arts and Commerce streams.

However, despite all the impediments and limitations, the college provides a good opportunities for girls to pursue higher studies in the region. The college has a unique lab for students opting for ‘Communicative English’ course. The lab, which is one of its kinds in MDU, is equipped with state-of-art system for in ‘Communicative English’. The college also runs a Sanskrit Samvad Kendra for efficiency in spoken Sanskrit.

Besides, the college has a computer lab, psychological lab and geography lab, equipped with sophisticated gadgets. A recent visit by a team of the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC) praised the role of the college in providing an excellent opportunity to girl students to pursue higher education.
