Free health service to women, diabetics
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 23
The Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research is offering free consultation on diabetes and women’s health at Dr Morepen, Lifespring store, South Extension.
The residents of Delhi can avail themselves of the benefit of free consultation from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm till January 30.

The initiative is part of the institute’s endeavour to bring hassle-free, quality consultation closer to the residents of the city and also to emphasise the importance of preventive healthcare.

The free camp is being announced through mailers, radio announcements and effective placement of posters and banners in the vicinity and at various Lifespring stores.

The institute has set up an information desk at the venue, with a representative stationed at the site, to provide a first-hand information about the camp.

The consulting procedure is based on a number of factors such as gathering inputs about lifestyle habits, education level, awareness levels about the existing ailments, current level of treatment and care.

The inputs are helping the consultants to determine the barriers to the existing treatment received by the patients.

The consultants are also referring clinical tests and follow-up sessions.

According to Mr Abhishek Bhartia, Director of the Sitaram Bhartia Institute, this camp in collaboration with the Dr Morepen, Lifespring store, is a step towards promoting preventive measures in Delhi.

Owing to changes in lifestyles, pre-diabetic conditions and women’s health are becoming a major concern in the city’s health sector. Pre-diabetic conditions such as impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose levels, have depicted 30 per cent of the population turning into diabetics, if the patient check-up trend resisted preventive measures.

Through this camp, the institute is trying to educate patients on how the symptoms and diseases can be controlled.

Mr Bhartia said, “We are trying to emphasise how regular check-ups and tests can negate complications arising from diabetes. It is the endeavour of the institute to bring its vast experience and research knowledge to treat patients at the initial stages.”

As a special feature, the camp is providing the benefits of unlimited consultations with specialised doctors during the 10-day tenure.

In-depth counselling sessions are being imparted. Education is being provided at the camp to address the psycho-social needs of the patients.

HC demands report on animal flaying
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 23
Expressing concern over the reports that animal carcasses were being flayed at Gazipur landfill site in East Delhi, the Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi Municipal Commissioner to file a detailed report in this regard.

Besides the unhygienic conditions prevailing in the landfill site, located near the Hindon Air Base, the collection of carcasses and their flaying has resulted in the loss of six MiG aircraft over the years due to bird hits, claimed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

Stating that the court was not satisfied with the affidavit filed by MCD on the issue, a Division Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Devinder Gupta and Justice B D Ahmed, directed the Delhi Municipal Commissioner to look into the matter personally. The judges asked for the detailed report from the Commissioner by March 7, the next date of hearing.

The court had earlier observed that the conditions prevailing in the landfill site could invite spread of diseases in the city. It had ordered the MCD to inform the court about the steps it wanted to take to improve the situation.

The MCD had been asked to file an affidavit within four weeks, failing which the Health Officer of the Shahdara Zone will be summoned to give an explanation. The judges said this after viewing photographs of the area supplied by a petitioner in a PIL filed by the United Communist Party of India through its counsel Namita.

The PIL alleged that besides unhygienic conditions and unbearable stench, birds descended on the trans-Yamuna area due to collection of carcasses and their flaying. The nearby Hindon Air Base lost six MiG aircraft over the years due to bird hits, it claimed.

Though the MCD had accepted that several birds flocked to the area, it attributed this to the fact that garbage or waste was brought in from all other MCD zones to this ‘notified landfill site.’ The corporation was also trying to ‘counter the problem of birds,’ it said.

The petition charged that carcasses from all the 12 corporation zones were sent to Gazipur where they were allowed to be flayed in violation of the MCD Act. The petition also sought setting up of a scientific flaying and disposal centre in the Capital.

The MCD had earlier denied that any flaying was allowed at the impugned site and stated that authorities in all zones had made different arrangements for collection and disposal of carcasses found in their areas. It had claimed that carcasses were only collected there before being taken outside the city for ‘removal and disposal’ by contractors.
